The Big Guy LOVES The Big EZ... and YOU!Dear Big Guy In The Sky: Sure, you handed me a little bit of a crappy weekend. You know, with my phone getting stolen and the Colts losing pathetically, and so on. But I know, I live a blessed life. I mean, I get to talk sports on the radio all day, and eat me a little Tubby's Pizza every Monday. People would kill to be in my shoes. And I know once every 20 years you have to make Giants fans happy.  I get that.

So as I lay my head down tonight, and reflect on the week that was, I also reflect on what's to come....

Big Guy, PLEASE, I mean pretty please... don't let the Chargers win against the Patriots this Sunday in Foxboro. I know, I know--the Patriots are 14 1/2 point favorites, and--oh yeah--they're undefeated. But with my Colts out, I have one last hope for an interesting Super Bowl. And as much as you and I both know that I dispise the Patriots, we also BOTH know that the Super Bowl would be much less interesting with Norv Turner, Philip Rivers, Billy Volek and the Chargers.

And if you're feeling mighty fine, let's go ahead and throw in the Packers as well. Brett Favre, Tom Brady. The newbie coach vs. the "Spy Guy". It'd be great!

So thanks for everything. I've bounced back strong on a Monday. But my depression is still there. And I'd like to see the Patriots lose... just not BEFORE the Super Bowl.

Love ya Big Guy!

Former U of L Running Back Anthony Allen Still Making News

I had no idea that this topic would be so polarizing on the radio today.

If you missed it, an appeals committee at the University of Louisville upheld the decision by head football coach Steve Kragthorpe and athletic director Tom Jurich that part of Anthony Allen’s request to transfer from U of L includes the stipulation that Allen cannot transfer to Arkansas, new (and probably temporary) home of former U of L head man bobby Petrino.

I think this is absolutely absurd of the University of Louisville to do this.  Allen isn’t happy at U of L.  Let him go.  But the Cardinal program is concerned that allowing Allen to follow Petrino to Arkansas will mean that other players will follow suit.

My only response to that is this: Why would you want players to play for you on Saturdays (or whatever day) that don’t want to really play at the University of Louisville?

And I understand Louisville’s side.  I think it’s unfair to the student-athlete (isn’t that what it’s all about?), but I’ll digress.

What’s more disheartening is the fear that U of L shows by this decision.  They’re saying that they are afraid that other kids are unhappy at U of L and would rather be with Petrino than with Kragthorpe.  Public perception is U of L is scared that other players aren’t happy with their current head coach AND/OR the athletic administration themselves think that Petrino is just plain better than Kragthorpe.  That’s a BAD message to send to the public–a message that some diehard Cards fans expressed today.

Again, I understand why Tom Jurich and Steve Kragthorpe are doing this.  I just think it’s wrong.  A lot of their motivation for making this decision against Allen is to screw over Petrino.  I’m guessing it doesn’t hurt his feelings too much.  And, on top of that, I think it sends the wrong messages about what U of L thinks of Kragthorpe, and what U of L thinks their football players think about Steve Kragthorpe, at least when it comes to comparing him to Petrino.

And this is all coming from a guy who has the utmost respect for Tom Jurich as an athletic director, businessman, and as a person.

I wish the best for Anthony, because in juvenile instances like this one, it IS about the STUDENT-ATHLETE.

Why hello Mr. OdenBIG EZ Takes Ohio State

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve been in here, but I’m telling you, I am going to make this a new year’s resolution… to start blogging more (we’ll see how long that lasts).

Anyway, let me get started.  I made a couple different ‘wagers’ today.  I made a small play on the Buckeyes straight up in tonight’s BCS National Championship game.  I put a slightly bigger play on the Buckeyes +3.5.  I hate going against Pat Forde (I think he’s usually spot on, and he’s all over LSU), but I am.

Here’s why: I think Jim Tressel is a brilliant coach.  And I don’t use that term often.  His team seems to always be under the radar.  How is that possible?  I’m guessing it has something to do with how terrible the Big Ten is.  Nevertheless, he is also a great motivator, sending all his players the now-famous DVD with all the championship game naysayers on it.

I’m going against the grain.  It seems like everyone is picking the Tigers.  I, too, think the Tigers are more-talented.  But I’ll give Tressel the nod in the coaching department.  Not only that, but I’m banking on the fact that Ohio State will NOT lose this championship game for a second straight year… ESPECIALLY after the way they were embarrassed in last year’s game.

So give me the Buckeyes in a close one, where field goals are all LSU can come up with on numerous occasions…
Ohio State 24, LSU 23.

Grinch Stole the Bowl Season

Yeah, I think he did. Yesterday is supposed to be one of the finest days of sports until we get to March Madness. There are bowl games all day and then you throw UL basketball and an outside hockey game it pretty much is enough to make a sports fan hit the OVERLOAD button. But this season, the BCS and those who benefit from it have been caught with their pants down. Thus far we've played 2 BCS games and here are your results.

49-17 USC destroys Illinois. How did the Zooksters end up here anyways? How are they number 17 and that gets them in a BCS game? What about the other top teams who are ahead of Illinois but are destroying teams such as Arkansas. Yes, we leave Missouri out just to see them utterly embarass Arkansas. But anyways in the second half were you not laughing how gross and stupid this enormous "grandaddy of them all" looked. USC might have just been hitting their stride and getting healthy but seriously how embarassed should Illinois be? Good representing the Big 10 again in the BCS.

38-7 Missiouri kills Arkansas (minus Petrino). Missouri went from number 1 in the nation and playing in the Big 12 Championship to destroying Arkansas which isn't even ranked. So you have a former number 1 and a team undeservingly in the Cotton Bowl and this is what you get. Mid as well make the Cotton Bowl the next BCS bowl.

41-10 Hawaii Almost Shows Up Against Georgia. Is Georgia the best team in the land? If nothing else this Georgia team and this Hawaii team are why there needs to be a playoff. For Georgia they would probably find themselves in the championship game...maybe against LSU? On the other side, what Boise State did for non-BCS teams, Hawaii destroyed last night. At no point did you ever think Hawaii was in this game or that they could EVER make some sort of a run. Hawaii should be embarassed, Brennan goes out looking awful in front of a national crowd, and now hopefully June Jones can quit talking about how his team deserves to be "there". Who's worse: Arkansas or Hawaii?

I want to give other big shout outs to the Indiana Hoosiers who finally went on national tv and embarassed theselves. Gundy's fired up Cowboys dropped 35 in the first half and never looked back. Don't blame me, I'm 40!!

And on a nice and much more kinder (is that a word?) level big ups to Florida/Michigan. Good game all around. Michigan gets the win, Lloyd Carr cries, and Tebow who had already won the Heisman was forced to throw. According to the announcing crew that's a bad thing for Florida when the QB MUST throw....I agree. Also, Clemson/Auburn gave us a good game and Kentucky topped FSU minus 36 players. Another game nationally that nobody cares about.

Isn't it too bad that a year with the most bizarre matchups and shocking upsets is also the one with the lamest bowl (thus far) and most boring commentary. Who really wants to watch a 30 point domination. Aren't these teams supposed to be close with all the parity in college football? All we need now is the almost certain collapse of West Virginia and back to back slip ups by the Buckeyes. I hope it doesn't happen but c'mon this is the BCS.

Ciao,
Andy Sweeney
