The show has been fantastic to do lately. Lots of good topics. All the shows on the The Zone have been on fire lately. Great radio!
Today on the show, I talked about how upset I was with the relatively-crappy attendance figure that UK put up in their definitely-crappy performance against Stony Brook (Shopping Center). I watched that game, along with the IU-Georgia Tech game Tuesday night. And I couldn't help but to notice a TON of empty seats at Rupp. I didn't really expect that. I know the opponent is garbage (or so I thought), but this is Kentucky, right? Bad attendance doesn't happen at Kentucky games.
We took many calls on the subject from UK fans, and the response was split down the middle. Some fans agrees, some disagreed with my take that the attendance is flat out disappointing and unacceptable by Kentucky basketball standards. Then a colleague of mine who has been very good at trying to make me better at my job (which I appreciate more than he probably knows), led me to John Clay's blog. He writes a post that shows evidence that crappy attendances have been a fairly regular commodity over the recent years at Rupp.
I guess it's just the aura that I thought the University of Kentucky basketball always had. Maybe it's not there anymore. I mean, sure, you can watch the game on TV now with all the channels (even though the Big Blue Network broadcasts suck--the picture they send is not even near clear, and we all know about Rob Bromley), and the football team may have taken more than their regular share of the UK fan's budget. Either way, I'll never get on the UK fan base for only filling Rupp to 81% capacity again.
