It's a feel-good Friday here at the Big EZ Show and lots of exciting things are going on.
The show tipped off with Walter McCarty's music album and EZ's thoughts about the new assistant coach's music career. EZ thought it was pretty good and played several songs off of his album.
Walter McCarty Album
EZ then got onto the NBA draft from last night, saying it was fairly lackluster because of the hype. EZ thought Boston trade was pretty good, except the fact that they are paying more. But don't you pay more for talent. EZ wanted to know if Ray Allen and Paul Pierce can co-exist.
A caller wanted to know a little more about Walter McCarty joining the U of L staff.
EZ then went right back to the draft. EZ gave a rundown of the top 10 and his opinions of how each prospect will match-up with their respective teams. EZ thought the draft got murky after the first 8 or 9.
EZ then got into talking about pools. G thinks pools are good.
Hour 2 started with our daily Big 3 matchup, '86 Louisville vs. '93 UK. Check below to vote or go to www.bigezshow.com. EZ took some callers about the Big 3 matchup, before announcing a surge in UK votes, maybe the '93 team is looking to pull the upset.
Svend Jansen from the Louisville Bats joined the show to talk a little baseball. Ryan Freel's stint here lead off the disucssion. EZ then asked about the Bats record, which is hovering around .500. Svend and EZ talked about the current homestand the on-coming AAA all-star game.
EZ then gave a Big 3 update before letting Nate and Mike Hutzel listen to one of Walter McCarty's songs.
Hour 3 started with Joey Adams from triplecrownselections.com joining the show. Joey recapped his day yesterday and previewed today's races and the weekend at Churchill. Make sure you get all your handicapping needs from Joey at TripleCrownSelections.com!
EZ then talked about why he thinks McCarty is a good choice as an assistant giving credit to Pitino for having taught so many good assistants. Hutzel and EZ then discussed more NBA draft.
EZ and Hutzel then discussed the baseball milestones achieved yesterday Frank Thomas 500th HR and then getting thrown out of the game and Craig Biggio getting hit number 3,000 and then getting thrown out at 2nd base.
Walter McCarty then joined the show to talk about his new job, assistant with U of L basketball. EZ praised McCarty for all his career achievements. EZ and Walter then discussed everything surrounding the new coach. Congrats to Walter.
The last segment of the day started off with callers about McCarty.
Check out more Big EZ show 10am-1pm on Monday!

Well, as you've probably heard by now, Walter McCarty will replace Marvin Menzies as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Louisville. In our own little version of a coaching carousel, Menzies will take the head coaching position at New Mexico State, a job previously owned by former U of L assistant Reggie Theus.
Please hold off on making any judgments about our newest Wildcat-turned-Cardinal until you hear snippets of McCarty's R&B album (thanks to Card Chronicle for the tip). You wanna make babies tonight Cats and Cards fans? Do it to you old (or new) hoops hero.
In a heated Game 2 matchup, the #4 '51 Kentucky Wildcats defeated the #5 '40 Indiana Hoosiers 60% to 40%.
Game 3 is a match up between the #3 ’86 Louisville Cardinals and the #6 ’93 Kentucky Wildcats. The ’86 Cardinals were National Champions under coach Denny Crum. They went 32-7 won the Metro Conference Regular Season Championship and the conference tournament. They were led by Seniors Billy Thompson and Milt Wagner along with sensational freshman Pervis Ellison. The ’93 Wildcats went 30-4 and was Rick Pitino’s first Final Four team at Kentucky . The Cats, led by juniors Jamal Mashburn and Travis Ford along with senior Dale Brown, were SEC Tournament Champions and advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans .

It will be nice when the NBA Draft actually means something, again. I mean, let's be honest, you can only enjoy the Polish Basketball Association's supplemental draft so much before it loses its luster. Besides Lukasz was a late-rounder, anyways, and with the time change I just can't stay up past 4 am. I'm utterly shocked more NBA GM's have overlooked some of the Tubby gems like Shagari Alleyne, Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas. Who, to paraphrase Billy Gillispie's reference to Jared Carter in a press conference, "everyday they wake up and they are tall," which can't be a bad thing. Oh yes, the Tubby recruits - always good for a laugh or for UK fans, a cry.
The NBA Draft means nothing ... reason #432 as to why I hate Orlando Smith.
By Kenny Colston

The Thirsty Thursday edition of the Big EZ show is here so let's get the show on the road.
EZ started the lineup with the NBA Draft and the Oden/Durant debate. EZ went to a Rick Bozich column in today's C-J where Bozich asked five U of L players who they would have picked. EZ kept going on the draft debate.
Keith Conrad joined the show to talk a little draft and other sports news. EZ then hyped up the Big 3 game today '51 UK vs. '40 IU. Check below or go to bigezshow.com to vote!
Conrad then talked a little bit about DeAndre Liggins commitment to UK and Jody Demling's great job so far. Conrad and EZ then got to some draft debate. Oden/Durant... who should go number 3, and everything basic draft storyline was covered by EZ and Conrad. EZ picked Oden easily.
Hour 2 started with Phil Steele coming on the show for some college football chatter. Phil's No. 1 storyline was USC-will the Trojans lose a game. Steele gave Washington the hardest schedule nod. Steele picked Georgia to win the SEC East, but thought South Carolina was the most talented. Steele has UK ranked a little lower than most, but gave the Wildcats the nod in the talent department. But UK's poor defense and road schedule had Phil dropping the Cats a little. Steele then got to talking about U of L and the Big East for this year. Phil has U of L getting to the BCS, but not UK. Make sure you pick up Phil Steele's preseason football magazine.
Next up, EZ brought up the best suits from the NBA Draft with Keith Conrad. Then EZ just marveled over Shaq's reality show saying he loved it. EZ then talked about some of the kids on the show. Back to the draft, Conrad picked Big Baby Davis as a draft sleeper.
Hour 3 started with a little nasty smelling fart... luckily it was a clip from Shaq's new show in which a kid farts while doing sit-ups. Keith gave a personal testimonial about using Joey Adams' handicapping sheet and was happy about the results. Joey then joined the show for daily Churchill insight. Joey talked about his big wins yesterday and then got to his card today. Make sure you get all your handicapping needs from Joey at TripleCrownSelections.com!
EZ then went to a little trivia to give away Bats tickets, skirting the normal How Low Can You Go game for today. Congratulations to our winners of Bats tickets.
In the last segment, EZ gave some time to UK commit DeAndre Liggins and took some callers on the issue. But EZ quickly went back to the Draft, giving his own little mock draft.
Check back tomorrow for more Big EZ show 10am-1pm!

Game 2 features two teams from way back. It pits the #4 ’51 Kentucky Wildcats against the #5 ’40 Indiana Hoosiers. The ’51 Cats had a record of 32-3 and were SEC Champions. The team won UK ’s third National Championship in four years under Head Coach Adolph Rupp. The Cats were led by juniors Bill Spivey and Shelby Linville along with team captain Walt Hirsch. The ’40 Hoosiers won IU’s first National Championship under Head Coach Branch McCracken. The Hoosiers went 20-3 and were led by senior Marvin Huffman and junior Jay McCreary.

Having a great time on my vacation, but I'd be lying to you if I said that my mind has not been back in Louisville on my job. When I return, we will be just two weeks away from Big East Media Days in Rhode Island and three weeks away from SEC Media Days in Birmingham. God, I love football.
In the meantime, to keep me occupied, I do have the NBA Draft this week, which is a godsend considering how boring the rest of the sports world has become. The fact that a commitment in basketball recruiting is more important at this time of year just for the pure sake of having nothing else to talk about is pure indicative of the times we live in. Baseball is so oversaturated with television coverage, it's literally made us sick to our stomachs by late June.
On to the NBA Draft .. Portland will choose Greg Oden tomorrow numero uno and laugh all the way to the bank, as the Trail Blazers will immediately seek immediate dividends in media coverage, ticket sales and the like. This isn't like recent number one picks of foreign born crack babies. This is a guy that has been highly publicized for years. Went to college basketball and became a star and now is going to one of the most beloved NBA cities that has ever been created. Portlant will embrace Oden and all will be swell in the state of Oregon.
As far as Durant is concerned, the argument for his becoming the number one pick should have ended the moment he did an absolute choke job in Orlando at the pre-draft camp. Hey Kevin, finishing second to last among 300 guys and the 9th member of 98 degrees IS a big deal and it IS embarrassing. Either show up and compete or don't come at all. Kevin didn't need to attend the camp, obviously, to become the second pick in the draft, so why he ended up showing was borderline ridiculous. His agent should have been fired.
I am particularly interested in la Floridia Gatos and where they will land in the draft. Here's hoping Hortford gets picked third.

It's Wednesday, which means the week's almost over...so it's hump day on the Big EZ show!
EZ led-off with the Big EZ Show Big 3 Championship! Explaining the idea, how everything works, the seeding and everything else, EZ then unveiled matchup number one (check below) to vote or go to bigezshow.com.
EZ then got on a little soapbox about the Chris Benoit situation, saying he didn't want to spend a lot of time on a guy who killed his family. EZ said it deserves slim to none time on the issue.
EZ then brought up Boston pitcher Dice-K coming out with a CD which had EZ asking what other athletes would have good CD's. Semi-joking, semi-serious EZ just threw out some names. A caller talked a little about the Big 3 Championship before EZ got back into the CD debate. A quick little moment on Billy Gillispie got EZ off track again, but chill UK fans, it wasn't bad-mouthing.
EZ took some callers, who somehow turned it into trivia day before getting into whether Barry Bonds should make the All-Star team. EZ saved total judgement until he had the stats.
Hour 2 began with Major League Baseball All-Star team voting news. Is Barry Bonds an All-Star? EZ discussed their stats and whether or not Bonds qualifies. EZ then got to talking about U of L football.
EZ then got onto the Big Ten network picking up some IU games that normally would have fell to the regional ESPN Plus for football and basketball. EZ wasn't sure he would like it, because he would be blacked out. A few callers rang in to give their insight on whether or not they would give up a conference tv network no matter what their favorite conference was.
Back from a break, EZ went back to the "conference tv" debate wondering if fans would buy a network just to see a few football and basketball games. Then EZ went back to U of L football, wondering where U of L would fall? EZ liked the idea of two Big East teams making the BCS, but everyone doubted that could happen. EZ ran down the schedule for U of L, who has most of it's big games in the back of the schedule.
Hour 3 started with EZ still upset over the Big Ten network stealing some IU games from regional networks essentially blacking out fans who don't pay for the Big Ten network. EZ then encouraged people to keep voting in the Big 3 Championship.
Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com joined the show for daily horse racing action. Joey gave some of his picks for today's card and said some races had a shortage of horses. Joey expected more horses this weekend. If you want all of Joey's hot picks, visit TripleCrownSelections.com!
Back from a break, it's another Big 3 update. EZ then brought up on why he didn't want to talk about a wrestler who killed his family. Callers wanted to talk a little MLB, with one caller giving Nate hell for saying Griffey is bad, then Griffey caught fire. EZ then brought up an Askmen.com article listing what officals in pro sports make. MLB umps make a min. of 90,000 for making the big leagues as well as plenty of extras. NFL officials make between 29,000 to 100,000 depending on your service with playoff games adding thousands more.
The last segment of the day started off with another Big 3 update. EZ then started off with an article from Forbes.com stating rich and famous people's first job. EZ then asked Nate if he would pay for a conference TV station and Nate said he would.
Tune in tomorrow from more Big EZ show, 10am-1pm!

The first matchup of the tournament matches the #8 '59 Louisville Cardinals against the #1 '76 Indiana Hoosiers. The '59 Cardinals went 19-12 under coach Bernard Hickman. They were lead to the Final Four by captains Harold Andrews and Don Goldstein. The '76 Hoosiers were undefeated under coach Bob Knight and won the NCAA Championship. They were led by Scott May, Kent Benson, and Quinn Buckner.

For the rest of the summer, we here at The Big EZ Show thought it would be fun to find out (via the listeners) who the best teams in the history of IU, UK, and U of L were. And this is, by far, the most fun way to do it. MAKE A BRACKET.
So start up that July office pool. This should be a lot of fun. Now, don't hold us to the seeding. We admit, we didn't spend a whole lot of time on it. And yes, we know we left some teams out (I hate that the '04 UK team didn't make it, but they lost in the 2nd round).
If there are any obvious errors, speak now, or just don't. All these teams made it to the Elite Eight or better (EXCEPTION: '54 UK team, who was undefeated but declined an NCAA bid).
We'll do one game a day for the rest of the summer, and you can vote online at http://www.bigezshow.com. Stay tuned to The Big EZ Show for the start date. You can post in the comments section, or you can e-mail EZ at ez[@]1570thezone.com.

Its another Tuesday on the Big EZ Show and EZ isnt sure the show will go on because the mic smells like cigarettes from Scott Clark. EZ served up a Wimbledon rant about Tim Herron and why he has so many fans in England when he has only reached the final once.
BREAKING NEWS: Takeru Kobayashi may miss the July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest becasue of an arthritic jaw. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

EZ then discussed the latest U of L football player dismissed from the team and compared Coach Kragthorpe to Coach Pitino in that he takes no crap from anybody.
He then spun out a couple of times trying to get out that NASCAR has reminded Dale Jr that the sanctioning body owns the number and licenses it each year to team owners.
???
EZ touched on Dirk Minnifield's comments about the Dream Game a little in segment 2. Minniefield said he smoked pot the night before the game and that is why they lost. EZ sided with UL fans and players saying UL just beat UK, PERIOD. EZ believes UL would have still beat UK if the players hadnt done what they did.
+ = UL 80-UK 68
Callers kept ringing in on one side or the other about the smoky debate. EZ then wondered about Kevin Garnett being traded, the NBA draft and Shaq's new TV show. All we can say about Shaq's show is IRONIC. It's going to be pure comedy. EZ thought it was going to be a hit.
Hour 2 started with EZ talked about price gouging the Rockies recently had when the Yankees came to town. Fans were pissed, but EZ said he saw no problem with the raising of prices for one game. Callers got in their two cents about a range of topics while asking EZ's opinion. A lot of the callers weighted in on the pot issue, while a few wanted EZ's thoughts on wrestler Chris Benoit.
Back from a break, EZ read off football ticket prices for each team before having Howie Lindsey from CardinalSportsReport.com to talk some U of L athletics. EZ asked about the new juco transfers to the football team who could immediately impact the o-line. EZ then asked Howie about some more recruits on the Cards list.
EZ then brought up a story about a man who nearly lose a limb on a golf course when an alligator 10 feet, 11 in. got his arm. The pond on the hole had a warning sign and being that it's a Florida course, it's no surprise. EZ then got a smoking-ban soapbox after reading an article about a smoking ban in London. EZ had some strong opinions about the idea wanting the consumer or bar to decide. EZ then repeated the sad news that hot-dog eating champion Kobayshi will skip the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest this year.
Hour 3 started with Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com with his daily horse racing discussion. Post 1 was given to Scat Daddy who retired due to injury. EZ then asked Joey about any big races this week, with Joey mentioning a few stakes races, but not much else.
EZ briefly discussed a list of 101 sports events to attend and 10 not to attend before moving to the biggest chokes of all-time. Callers then came with their own favorite chokes.
EZ then ended the show giving odds on all the NFL teams to win the Superbowl and the over/under on the wins for every team.

It's another Margarita Monday on the Big EZ Show and EZ has a lot on tap for today's show.
EZ started in Post Position 1, talking about his decent day at the track yesterday but how he was cheated out of a big payday.
EZ then tooted the Indiana horn, who completed another sweep in boys basketball against Kentucky. EZ read an article asking if Kentucky is no longer the basketball king, the state, not the school. EZ was a little taken back by the question, but said basketball is more popular in Indiana while football is growing wildly in Kentucky. EZ wasn't ready to dethrone basketball in Kentucky, but said Kentucky had a big slide.
Callers then argued with EZ about why the Kentucky team couldn't be as good as Indiana. EZ then stood on his stand that Kentucky is an increasingly football state. Callers still argued that politics keeps some of the best players off the Kentucky but EZ threw that away quickly.
People kept checking in at the phone lines, sometimes agreeing with EZ, others....not so much. But a lot of callers thought the losses have to do with the quality of Kentucky high school basketball coaches and it's wasn't a compliment by the callers.
Hour 2 started with EZ and Nate discussing a list of the top 10 manly cocktails for the summer from AskMen.com. EZ and Nate both agreed that it couldn't have any fruit and 1-3 ingredients. The rest of the segment included more discussion about the top 10 before EZ had enough of the Oden/Durant debate in the NBA draft.
Next up, EZ spoke of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which had Nate giggling. EZ tried to tell the story, but Nate had a story to tell. EZ then continued with a story about an American reporter being kicked out of the Chilean locker room. More on this story later.
Rick Bozich joined the show, fresh off a trip to Chicago to watch his favorite White Sox. EZ and Rick talked about Omaha and the College World Series, his Chicago trip, Craig Biggio/Chris Burke, and his favorite cocktail.
The last segment of Hour 2 started with a discussion about paintball--is it a sport? Using certain definitions, the guys playfully decided before EZ brought up a SI.com article ranking the toughest schedules in the conferences. UK is 6th in the SEC, which includes non-conference. EZ then ran down the rankings of the rest of the SEC before moving to the Big East. West Virginia has the toughest according to SI.com. Pittsburgh grabbed number 2, and Louisville grabbed the number 3 ranking. EZ then ran down the remaining list of Big East schools. Indiana grabbed the easiest schedule from SI.com, ranking 11 out of 11 Big Ten teams.
Hour 3 started with Joey Adams of TripleCrownSelections.com joining the show. EZ started off by telling his sad story about being screwed yesterday at the track. Joey first talked about the happenings at the track yesterday before talking about the Horse of the Year race being wide open. Joey also talked about Invasor being retired after a workout injury. Check out Joey on TripleCrownSelections.com, where you can find all your handicapping needs.
Fred Cowgill joined the show and EZ immediately bounced the Kentucky hoops questions to Fred. Fred agreed that basketball is in decline in the state, while football is rising quickly. Fred and EZ talked more basketball and more about Fred's Scramble for a Cure.
For the last segment of the show, EZ went on a little soapbox about David Hobbs, the former UK assistant who EZ just couldn't stand.
Check back tomorrow for more Big EZ 10am-1pm.

Todd Mayo's getting a "chubby" as we speak at the thought of next year's basketball season after the news today that former Iowa forward Tyler Smith has been officially granted a hardship waiver, meaning the sophomore-to-be will be eligible to play for the Volunteers this upcoming season and will not have to sit out due to NCAA rules. The 6-foot-7, 220 pounder, who is a native of Pulaski (Tn.), wanted to be closer to his father, Billy, who has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The news is horrible for the rest of the Southeastern Conference, as the Vols, who are already the heavy pre-season favorite to win the conference, add a player who will undoubtedly make a tremendous impact on an already stacked roster that returns all six top scorers from a year ago. Tennessee and Bruce Pearl are coming off an impressive season that saw them post 24 regular season victories and an impressive postseason Sweet 16 run that saw the Vols blow a double-digit halftime lead against the Buckeyes in the regional semifinal.
In Smith, they are adding yet another piece to the already impressive puzzle that also includes Arizona transfer J.P. Prince, who is the cousin of former Kentucky star Tayshaun Prince. Last year, coming in as arguably the most heralded freshmen in the Big Ten not playing at Ohio State, the prep star ranked second for the Hawkeyes in scoring with 14.9 points a game and led the team with 4.9 rebounds.
Individually, this is the right move by the NCAA and good for Smith, who's certainly been under intense trama these past two years. Not only has he endured the chilling reality of his father, but he's also had to overcome two coaches bolting on him in consecutive years. Originally, a Buzz Peterson signee to Tennessee, Smith tried to get out of his letter-of-intent to UT when Pearl was hired as head coach two years ago. Pearl declined, causing Smith to drop out of school and enroll at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia.
After a year at prep school, Smith signed with Iowa, only to see head coach Steve Alford head for the greener pastures of New Mexico, after his freshmen year. Now a sophomore, Smith is enrolled in school in Knoxville, where he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
I don't know about you, but the tought of hearing Rocky Top for more than one game at the SEC Basketball Tournament, makes me wanna puke. Everybody now .. Rocky Top you'll always be, home sweet home to meeee .. Good Ole Rocky Top .. SECOND IN THE SEC! SECOND IN THE SEC!

Off to Hilton Head Island tomorrow for a week of relaxation and fun with the Italian clan (see above) that is called my family. It's been an exciting first three/four months at 1570 The Zone for me. In looking back, we've had some amazing guests and interactions with some of the nation's best writers, high school recruits and coaches. Additionally, we've had a professional eater, a life coach, a fortune teller and a scientologist. Before my plane leaves in a few hours, I thought I'd take a chance to thank some of the folks that have been great in the process.
First, we have to thank our sponsors. From Lucky Strike to Bud's Tavern to Sully's, the majority of the folks that support "The Sports Mob," are doing so on blind faith and fear of my Italian family going after them (just kidding). They've all believed in a product without actually seeing the numbers and the books. Even if they did, during this 'down-time' for sports radio, it would hardly tell the story anyways. We appreciate you and don't thank you enough.
Second, I'd like to thank some of the talent at our station. You really don't understand how special it is to work with Johnny Renshaw, who is one of the most special individuals I've ever encountered and who is as talented, as he is entertaining. Nasty Nate, who formerly helped produce our Saturday show, which seems like so long ago I can't even remember the name of the show. The Big EZ, who is constantly having to pick up the slack that I leave him for not doing my promos and not knowing how to do anything at the station. Zach's one of the most genuine people I've had the chance to hang out with in Louisville and he also is the only one that would stand up a night with Rob Gidel. Anyone that can humble me, is a friend of mine. And finally Dave Ragone and Scott Clark, who has always been there for fatherly advice and the chance to lighten up the mood. My introvert personality sometimes prevents me from truly expressing my appreciation for these guys, but it has been a special ride thus far and it's because of them that we've been so successful so early.
Third, our fans of the show from Kentucky Sports Radio. You guys helped get us to our destination. I may have been able to do plenty of radio on my own through my work at Scout.com, but without the help of the base audience, I highly doubt Matt and I would be singing our own song every day from 3 to 7 pm.
Lastly, I'd like to thank the suits. They are special people and they are working there asses off for us, everyday. They make me laugh and calm more storms than Mark Wahlberg on a daily basis, so for that I am greatly appreciative. I don't envy there job, that is for sure, but they do all they can to ensure that the masses are happy and that I can eat, albeit at Thortons gas station, and for that I am greatly appreciative. My vitamin intake has been in there hands for a few months now and they've yet to leave me starving in the desert. On to Hilton Head to play a lot of golf, eat lots of variations of pasta and be Uncle Robbie for a few days. I'll be seeing ya.
By Kenny Colston and Derrick Johnson

The big man has returned for the Friday edition of The Big EZ Show on 1570 The Zone.
The opening rant of the show dealt with EZ giving his thoughts of the hot and humid Florida weather. He said he would not want to move there because everytime he walked outside he was instantly wet with sweat.
Next, EZ sent his condolences out to the entire Indiana University family for the loss of head football coach Terry Hoeppner on Tuesday. He hopes fans show up this year to root on the players and he hopes the players play their hearts out for coach.
EZ then touched on Louisville baseball and how he felt they represented this city well and how he was glad they didnt just show up and lose two games. They played hard and played with pride.
Back from a break, EZ starting putting his two cents about the UK-UofL football game not being on TV, whether it's good to move the game or if Barnhart just threw the ball away. EZ then threw the anger back to the fans calling them selfish if they are mad about moving the game. Callers lit up the lines some upset that a major network isn't picking up the game, others didn't care because they were going to be in attendance. Other callers debated EZ about rivalries. EZ wrapped up the hour fielding calls.
Hour 2 kicked back off with more UofL-UK talk with EZ claiming that on a national scale, the game isn't a rivalry and doesn't hold much weight. A few callers argued with EZ, but the big guy didn't back off his stance. Even after a break, EZ wanted to know what tickets were going for.. and on Stubhub.com, a 40-yd line seat was going for 400 dollars.
EZ then talked about the two football recruits U of L picked up yesterday.
Back from a break, Mike Hutzel joined EZ who asked about Mike's Boston trip and to throw out the trivia question for the day.
Hour 3 started with EZ putting Mike Hutzel in a mini-hot seat.
Joey Adams joined EZ with a recap of last weekend's rqaces and a preview of this week's races. You can find all of Joey's picks at triplecrownselections.com. He will make you a very happy bettor if you just follow his picks. Today is happy hour at Churchill so go out and win some money. Listen Saturday from 9-10 to Joey right here on 1570 the Zone.
Next up was trivia time, with callers trying to win Bats tickets. No one was able to answer a question so no Bats tickets. Boo Hoo.
Mike and EZ then went down a list of the top 100 American movies, picking their favorites and deciding where things should have been ranked. EZ then quickly ran down pre-preseason college basketball rankings from ESPN and CBSsportsline. Check us back out again 10am-1pm on Monday.

OK, time for IKE to write since the Celtics are involved.....Most of you who know me realize how big of a Celtic fan I am....not just some ol 1980's "white guy Larry Bird fan".....but an OCD Celtic passionate lover.....yea, i said lover....aint ashamed......I was able to quit loving my X wife, but will never quit loving my C's.....pictures of me and tommy Heinson and Larry Bird are on my wall.....I have the NBA ticket and watch every game....like folks around here love their college hoops and follow their teams ups and downs, I live it in an 82 game with my guys......seeing the great yr that Rajon had was a time I will never forget......the Lottery hurt....I actually watched it with my Dad (the man that turned me onto the Celtics in 1976 with tommy Heinson running up and down the sideline as our great coach)......when we got that number 5 i yelled out "F#ck" in front of him.....hey, we are cool and drink beer and talk about woman together....but he hates that word and gets pissed when i say it.....but i couldnt hold back my emotions.....we have a great number of young scorers that will go ohter places and do great things like Chauncy Billups, Bruce Bowen and Joe Johnson have done after starting their careers in Beantown.....I have learned to accept that.....but one I didnt want to give up was The Great Al Jefferson....the durability of Robert Parish (now that he has learned to play thru a few aches and pains), ....the rebounding of Moses Malone....and the ptential consistant high shooting percentage guy like the A-Train, Artis gilmore.....but, like a lot of young people, Boston's past and tough media scared them off....he wants to play in phoenix.....oooh, thats challenging.....but what do you expect from a guy that fades away 80% of the time in the crunch......hey KG, the suns aint giving their studs up for you (at least they shouldnt)....playing along side Paul pierce couldnt have been very educational for a softy like you.....Paul Pierce has had more game winners in one season than KG has had in his soft career...you aint ever getting out of the first rd in minn (if you even make the playoffs).....but in boston you had a chance to play before some of the most passionate, loyal fans in basketball......look at the attendance records for a team that won so few games......the real fans in boston love their C's.....but it is a sox town, no doubt.....the Celtic fans are hard core loyal people....i dont think KG's emotional ass could have handled the NE media anyway....but at 31 and playing Philly, NYK, and NJ at least 14 or 15 times a yr, he would have played in some great tv games for the league and fans.....i mean those minn games on TV are yawners....even in their hayday.....their is something about the stars playing in the Atlantic Conference....great match ups, and hype.....but, you dont surprise me.....you are a sissy and I have about as much use for you as a mid 90's pager on my hip....your days are over...move the drill....i actually have more respect for Chris Webber at this point....he might not have been able to get past Shaq....but as history has shown us, you couldnt even get to the series to play the Lakers back then.....go "fade Away" in some nowhere town....you had a chance to change your legacy...and you blew it....

The media continues to look higher than a homeless person on smelling salts as the love fest for Sammy Sosa continues after Sammy joined four others on the 600 home-runs list. Geez, I guess if only Mark McGwire had been born in the Dominican Republic. Only then, could he have gotten serious consideration into the baseball Hall of Fame. Why of course, because then he could have gone in front of Congress and claimed language retardation, or as some would call the Dominican brain fart.
You remember that, right, America?
You sure as hell remembered it when Mark McGwire came on the ballot, last year. Yep, all you could picture was the St. Louis slugger standing in front of a grand jury and fumbling around like Michael Vick, aka Ron Mexico, at a walk-in clinic.
Sammy, who managed to speak so eloquently at his press conference last evening, told Congress he was unable to speak English when it comes to steroids. Steroids often does that to people. I suffer from a similar disease when talking about bloody marys at Lucky Strike or that one night I spent a week in Cancun. Or that last girl I had relations with prior to my current girlfriend.
You know, Dominican brain farts? They come out of nowhere.
In a poll on ESPN.com, asking fans about Sammy Sosa's hall of fame candidacy, the majority of America agreed: Sammy Sosa is a "sure-fire" Hall-of-Famer.
Oh really? Guess you forgot his rookie season as a Texas Ranger when Sosa resembled Lindsay Lohan on meth (see pic above). This despite the fact he got busted for playing with a corked bat. Or the fact that he was mentioned in Jose Canseco's book - which oddly enough - is as accurate as Albert Einstein's formula for relativity. I guess we forgot that when testing went into affect in Major League Baseball, Sosa subsequently hit below his ACT score and lost more weight than Jared from the subway commercial. I guess we forgot about the time SI's Rick Reilley asked him about 'roids and Sammy said you could test him any place, anytime. Just not on that day. And lastly, I guess we forgot the fact that he managed to lose his English in one timely afternoon that saw America witness arguably the three biggest frauds of our time - Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro - become the laughing stock of American sports.
You remember that, right, America?
Sammy Sosa is the most undeserving Hall of Famer this country has ever seen. He never accomplished anything until he became the roid-head that captivated the country's attention. He was nothing less than a sub-par ball player living on sun flower seeds and minor league groupies until he got ahold of the juice that made him a legendary figure in Baseball 'lore.
He is a fraud. He is a fake. And he is not deserving of baseball's most treasured home of the stars. I'll be fine when McGwire goes in, at least he did something prior to make him important enough to remember. I'll be okay with Barry Bonds, he would have gotten in pre-steroids, anyways. But Sammy? Sammy is a joke of a ball-player and a joke of a person. I seriously hope there is a special place in hell for this lying sack of no good, piece of tar.

Just wanted to get some thoughts off of my chest while I was thinking about them, as I am back in town and will be back in the driver's seat tomorrow on the Friday edition of the show.
- I am just really saddended by the passing of Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner. The rumblings began (at least the ones I heard) about a month or so ago that it wasn't looking great, but still, no one thought he'd be gone this soon. It's a shame. I hope the players and fans will appreciate what he did for the program by playing hard and attending and cheering at the games respectively.
- The U of L-UK football game will be on television, I'm fairly certain of that. But it will be on some obscure network and if you don't have a ticket or you don't subscribe to all the "cool" sports networks, you'll probably have to go to a bar. My question: how much will this UP the value of the ticket for the game?
- Sammy Sosa is a hall of famer, no question. So are Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, and others. There was a steriod era of baseball and other players used it that we don't know about it, some of which are already in the Hall of Fame. So, for about the tenth time I say, they're all IN!
- So, I guess Rosie O'Donnell may take over for Bob Barker on The Price Is Right. Rumor is this may not happen. But if it does--short term, I think it's a great idea. Long term, it'll be terrible, and Rosie won't last more than 18 months. You heard it here first.
It's good to be back. Talk to you guys tomorrow.
By Derrick Johnson and Kenny Colston

Eric Waxler, WHAS11 sportscaster joined Nasty Nate for the show today since Big EZ is still out of town.
The first pitch thrown by Waxler brought Sammy Sosa to the table. Sosa hit his 600th home run last night against the Chicago Cubs, his first against his former team. Eric thought his stats would forever be tainted due to his allegations of steroid use.
Discussion then got tossed over to the UK-UL game not being a part of the ESPN coverage for September 15th. They then talked about the ESPN channels, wandering why there are so many of them. Back to UK-UL, Eric thinks it was a bad move for UK while Nate thinks it was an ok move.
Chris Cates, shortstop for the U of L baseball team joined the show to talk about the experience in Omaha at the College World Series. Cates talked about all the other teams making fun of his size and everything esle that invovled the little guy. sorry I had to make the joke. Cates then talked about being drafted and going to play minor league ball. Finally, he spoke about his encounter with ESPN's Erin Andrews and that there was no love connection made in Omaha.(good news for all mankind)
Trystan Magnuson, UofL pitcher and Manual High School product, joined Eric for the next segment. They first talked about his height 6'7" up against Chris Cates 5'3". Trystan said Chris was a great shortstop and was a fun player to have on the team. Trystan actually went to UofL because of the Speed School Engineering program and walked on as a baseball player. Boy, were glad that worked out. He then talked about the amenities and lifestyle the team had in Omaha. He said they were treated like rockstars. He was also chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays this spring in the draft and he talked a little about that with Eric.
Hour 2 invovled a hometown girl that's part of the San Antonio Spurs championship, Missy. Waxler interviews the UofL and PRP grad who is a member of the Spurs dance team, the Silver Dancers.
Back from a break, the guys brought on the owner of a new ABA team in town, the Kentucky Retros. The team starts it's season in November and Waxler ran the gaunlet about everything needed to revive an ABA team in Louisville. Steve Van Wise talked with Waxler about everything involved with the new team.
Bob Kravitz from the Indianapolis Star joined Eric to talk sports, including Bob's college athletic days and the Indiana Pacers suffering. Eric then turned to the SuperBowl champion Colts, asking about Manning and next season's prospects. Bob and Eric then talked about the on-coming NBA draft.
Next up, Eric's co-worker, Kyle Draper from WHAS-11, joined the show to talk about his time in Omaha about the town and everything surrounding the CWS. Waxler then asked Kyle what he thinks about a new ABA team in Louisville. Kyle and Eric then ran down the rest of the best action movies from Entertainment Weekly.
Thanks Eric for filling in, Big EZ should be back tomorrow so check it out from 10am-1pm.

With EZ still out of town on business, Kent Taylor sat in with Nasty Nate to fill in for the big man.
Coming out of the gate firing, Kent chatted with Clark Francis from the Hoop Scoop Online to discuss college basketball for the upcoming season and beyond. Clark discussed Indiana, Kentucky, and Louisville and gave some insight on current news on the recruiting front. You can visit his site at http://hoopscooponline.com/ to view recruiting news.
The next segment began with the Cardinal 9 and their return to the Ville after the College World Series run. Nasty Nate chimed in with his impressions of the college baseball scene. Callers jammed the phone lines wanting to talk about the series, not only the UofL-UNC game.
Jody Demling joined the guys for the last segment of hour 1 live from Omaha. Jody was out there covering the World Series for the Courier-Journal. His impressions of Omaha were that it is very unique and different than almost anything he has seen. Kent asked Jody whether or not he thought Coach McDonnell would return next year to the Cards or if he would bolt to a school like Tennessee or another big name school. Jody thought he would return because of the fact that the Big East provides an easier chance to return to the Series instead of going to the SEC and playing some of the best teams in the country every week. Jody's blog can be seen at http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/blog.html
Hour 2 kicked off with Chris Osborne, golf pro at Bardstown Country Club, chatting with Kent about a charity golf scramble coming up in September benefiting the March of Dimes. The Birdie for Babies Classic will be held on Monday, September 10th at Maywood Golf Course in Bardstown with lunch beginning at 11:00 and play starting at 12:30. The charity is very close to Chris' heart because his daughter was born premature and now is the second tallest kid in her class. The tournament is a shamble, which means everyone tees off and the best drive is chosen. From there, everyone plays their own ball to hole out. For more info visit http://marchofdimes.com/kentucky/ aand click on Birdies for Babies Golf Classic link.
Back from break, Kendrick Haskins, Wave3 photo-journalist called in from Midway Airport in Chicago on his way back from Omaha. Kendrick spent the week in Omaha with Bob Domine and said he has aged quite a bit over the last week.
Jeff Brohm, University of Louisville football assistant coach and passing game coordinator, joined the show to discuss summer news from the football team. Jeff discussed the coaching staff and how they are becoming closer as the days wear on, stating they are growing as a team as time goes on. The main goal for the coaching staff this spring was to insert as much of the Tulsa offense into the system to let the players adjust to it and become comfortable with it. Gradually, the team will add other plays and schemes over the summer and into the fall.

Hour 3 started off with Joey Adams, from triplecrownselections.com, coming on the show to discuss the day at Churchill Downs. Joey didnt have much new information on the races but did give us some picks for the day. Hopefully he wont make the same mistake today that he did last week when he made selections that would have won him over $26,000 but didnt bet them. Nice move Joey. Visit Joey site and get a full card of picks for $5 a day. You can also hear him right here on 1570 the Zone on Saturdays from 9-10am.
UofL running backs coach Tony Alford (pictured above right) joined us for the last segment. Coach is new to Louisville and so far has enjoyed his stay in the Derby City. Alford played at Colorado State learned a lot during his years there at CSU. He comes to Louisville from Iowa State where he was an assistant there as well. The running back situation this year for the cards is far from down. Anthony Allen, George Stripling, Sergio Spencer, Brock Bolen, and Doug Beaumont will all compete for snaps this upcoming year. Alford said he was very excited about Brock Bolen and seeing what he is capable of this year because he is very tough and plays hard.
Join us tomorrow on 1570 the Zone for more exciting sports radio. I have no idea who is hosting the show but I'm sure they will provide listeners with great topics and discussion from 10a-1p.
I lead off my blog with an e-mail from legendary CARD FAN AND ZONER…JOEY
As they said in STRIPES freak…..And then depression set in!" All I can say, Johnny, is "WOW!" Never thought we would be shut down with just one run. That was absolutely the best pitching we have faced all tournament. I knew we were in trouble when they were getting ready to put their closer in. Just a great job Carolina did in shutting us down. Didn't help with that error we gave to them, but I must tip my hat to them. Still thought we had a shot to win in the eighth, but once again their pitching stepped up and bailed them out.
Can't tell you enough how proud I am of them! Those guys played their asses off and really brought this city something special! They really have a great foundation for next year...and I can't wait to watch them again!
And it was absolutely fantastic to share this run with you, Freak! It is just great to have you back on the air here in LOUISVILLE! You truly are the best! Now...let's be proud that we are one of the eight best teams in baseball and let's gear up to make that run for a BIG EAST FOOTBALL championship and....dare I say it...a possible NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
I love ya, Freak...in a non gay way! …….JOEY
O.K. it is me again, the freak, the guy who doesn’t care about correct spelling. I have two words for Louisville Baseball. THANK YOU. Yes, the loss to North Carolina was a very bitter pill to swallow. And looking back at the Rice game, the, what could have beens, will keep me up all night. But forget about all that. As the new kid in town, Louisville baseball gave me the most unexpected sports Christmas present ever. From game one against MIAMI until the loss to UNC I have been high on CARDINAL BASEBALL. I dove in head first, did as much homework as humanly possible, and was rewarded by a once in a lifetime event.
Thank you coach Dan for leaving ole miss, and bringing the most aggressive style of play in the land….Thank u coach Williams, for turning an average pitching staff into a great one…..Thank you Boomer, for leading the nation in steals, setting the table, and making one of the greatest catch I ever saw…Thank u Logan for tying a college world series record with four homers, and laying down the coolest sac bunt ever, thank you Daniel, for coming through against Oklahoma state, and the 3 run home against Mississippi state. Thank u Mr. Howes, for leading the team in homers all year, and being a great clean up hitter. Screw those 4 strike outs against the tar heels, I have already forgotten about them… thank u Mingo, Chris Dominguez. Yes the errors hurt, but we would not have been there without you. You are the centerpiece of the future of cardinal baseball. And we will never forget your jumbo tron homer, thank you to the biggest collection of underrated role players that were as clutch as the day is long, the Miami cartel, and Castillo, Rodriguez, Alfonzo--- u didn’t get the ink, but you were as clutch as ANYONE. Thank you Chris cates for inspiring us all, and for being one hell of a ball player
Marks, pitts, wark, logsden, mangs, meade, hollendar--- you guys are the sh@t --
10 seniors will leave. We will not recognize next years team, but we will be in the seats, ALL SEASON LONG. THE birth of a baseball power and the birth of the freak dynasty.
No matter what happens in my life, I will NEVER forget the 2007 CARDINAL MAGIC

Welp, with Louisville's loss it means the 1570 The Zone wagon is coming back to the Ville, along with the rest of the Louisville media. It's been a good week, but let me get to a few others things first.
Yesterday's UC-Irvine and Cal State Fullerton game was forever long. It had me wondering if the coaches had gotten together and agreed to just play 2 before one of them went home. It was definitely nerveracking. But a great ending nonetheless. First of all, I have never seen a better outfield assist by the Cal State left fielder and the way the Cal State catcher blocked the plate--perfect. The bad news is, for all the greatness that was that play, it was all erased the very next play. I like Irvine, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pulling for Fullerton after that play. Oh well, at least they get to go back home to CALIFORNIA!
And here's a little thing I've going to just gush about. I spoke with Erin Andrews. Let that sink in... yes, that ERIN ANDREWS. The one picture a few blogs below. Someone please plug her photo in for me.

And first of all, let me say that she looks just as good in person. Now you ask how some intern at a Louisville radio station can talk to Erin Andrews... and I'll tell you. During the Oregon St./Arizona St. game, I decided to walk around the stadium to just see what was going on out there. And there she was, just chilling with a production assistant (who wasn't bad herself). It was a crowded intersection, which just happened to work in my favorite. Stuck behind a hot dog vendor, I obviously looked at Erin and when she looked back, I said Hi. She said hey back, we talked about the game a bit and unlucky for me the vendor was moving on. Which meant I had to as well. So yeah, it was just small talk, but it was ERIN ANDREWS!!!!!! Take that!
Back to baseball now I guess. It's no surprise that the one thing that got Louisville to this place is what left them when they lost. Pitching always beats hitting and it's not that UL doesn't have pitching. Heck 3 hits was the LOWEST amount of hits a team has gotten and won a game in the CWS. Pitching didn't make Louisville lose, defense did (or Chris Dominguez, but it happens. I could rant about all I think is right and wrong with Dominguez, but what's the point?). North Carolina just stepped up when they needed to and took advantage of their opporunities. Good teams do that. North Carolina is No. 3 overall for a reason. I think the Cardinals should be excited about finishing as the sixth best team in the nation. It sets a bar and is the best they have ever had. And it puts a fire in the bellies of the kids returning. If Chris Dominguez is smart, he'll cut down on the strikeouts and work on defense for next season. The good news for the Cardinals is that they return almost their entire staff, but have some two awesome pitchers who sat out all season with injuries who will contribute next year. I don't know about another trip to Omaha, but expect results next year.
Overall, Omaha has been fun. The Cardinals have had a good run and everyone here hates to go, but it's life. And heck, it gave us something to talk about in June. See ya back in Louisville soon.
How the CARDS won their first ever College World Series game

TOP FIRST -- Bommer leads off with a single. An opponent’s worst nightmare. How can a pitcher concentrate, with the nation’s number one base stealer on?....... Next batter Logan Johnson homers to the deepest of deep center. Johnson stays white hot. He is the most complete offensive player on the team. Just Like that 2-0 Louisville. …..Mississippi State, with its’ slow outfield and young infield are already on their heels. Did someone say HEELS? Mississippi State manager Ron Polk already on the mound visiting with starting pitcher Chad Crosswhite. The Bulldogs say they want 18 outs and the lead from Crosswhite, will they get it?
BOTTOM FIRST – Mississippi State was up on North Carolina 4-0, 2 days before, but lost 5-4. Louisville knows about being up and losing a lead, 5-0, and 10-4, to Rice……..No worries about the Bulldog running game. The Cards stole 153 bags, the Dogs 42!!!!!..... Jeff Rea leads off; he has more hits than anyone in State history and singles like a champ. However, a Marks strikeout, and a missed hit and run sealed by a great throw from Alfonso keeps the Cards up 2-0.
TOP SECOND – Chris Dominguez, MINGO, home run, first pitch!!! Deep deep center. 3-0 CARDS.
BOTTOM SECOND – A 5 – 4 – 3 double play, and a strikeout, end of inning.
TOP THIRD – Burton and Howes back to back doubles, 5 – 0 CARDS, just like the Rice game. STATE changes pitchers. Bases loaded two outs, Alfonso line drive out to third base.
BOTTOM THIRD – Stats say it should be a close game. National rankings in ERA, CARDS number 5, STATE number 11. National rankings in Runs-scored, both teams tied at 42. Incredible diving catch by Burton ends inning.
TOP FOURTH – Burton hits a three run homer after an unexpected sacrifice bunt by Logan Johnson, 8 – 0 CARDS. They have now scored 38 runs in their last 3 games.
BOTTOM FOURTH – Chris Cates falls down making an error. Next play – same type of fly ball – Dominguez calls off Cates, they both laugh. Two outs, runners at first and second. Justin Marks closes the door with a strike-out. STATE now 0 for 10 with runners on base.
TOP FIFTH – CARDS go quietly.
BOTTOM FIFTH – Two more strike-outs for Marks.
TOP SIXTH – Despite changing pitchers again, STATE strikes out the side with their closer.
BOTTOM SIXTH – Biggest scare of the season, Justin Marks hit in left knee cap by Mitch Moreland’s line drive. Marks stays in but it’s a wild pitch, walk, three run home run. It is now 8 – 3. Is this Rice again? Kyle Hollander comes into pitch and is saved by an inning ending double-play.
TOP SEVENTH – Chris Dominguez hits arguably the longest home run in College World Series history. A three run shot, his second of the game that misses the jumbotron by inches. His eighth homer and nineteenth RBI in the tourney. The CARDS add one more, it is 11 – 3 Louisville, no this is not Rice.
BOTTOM SEVENTH – Moreland gets a gift double on a missed jump by Rodriguez. Hollander is losing it, it is 11 – 4 CARDS. Skyler Meade comes in and ends the inning with one pitch.
TOP EIGHTH – You would think Robin Ventura would know his name by now, but he calls Mingo, Chris Rodriguez two times. Castillo robbed on a foul ball double, it should be 13 – 4.
BOTTOM EIGHTH – STATE does nothing.
TOP NINTH – Cates scores from first base on a Johnson single, 12 – 4 CARDS.
BOTTOM NINTH – CARDS three outs away from first College World Series win ever! Out number 1 – pop out to Rodriguez, out number 2 – Skyler’s third strike out, and the final out of this historic game sees Mitch Moreland gunned down at first by Logan Johnson…. Logan’s run…to be continued……a final four match-up is next, NORTH CAROLINA VS. LOUISVILLE. March Madness meets June Jubilation!

Thanks to whoever put the pictures in my last two blogs. I don't know where the Erin Andrews one came from, but I won't complain. She's nice to look at.
Anyway, I see the two game stories are up. I switched it up and blogged my thoughts on the Miss. St game and here's the preview for it coming sometime before this is all said and done. Don't worry, I'll do another game story after the Tuesday game.
We stayed around for last night's Rice/UNC game, even went to the press conference to see what the teams had to say. NC looked RATTLED. It was bad, real bad. One of their guys, Josh Horton had the Peyton Manning I just lost the the Patriots AGAIN face going. If you need explantation, think deer in the headlights x 10. Even the coach acted rattled. He spoke about having to give the ball to his pitchers confidently because if he doesn't... who will? That's good, good, good news for the Cardinals. But UNC was here last year and are a top-notch program. Something tells me they will bounce back, but who knows. They used 8 pitchers against Rice and just seemed blown away. The UNC coach called Rice "the best team we've played by far." Ouch.
VS
That brings us to Rice... who just looks like a ballteam. Joe Savery is a beast. A monster. The kid will eat your babies... oops, sorry that's Mike Tyson. Honestly, looking at all the Rice players right now, they just LOOK like MLB players. Their confidence is sky-high and for you fans hoping UL can come back and take two for Rice, I'm going to try and let you down easy. Last year, Rice was in this VERY SAME spot. Hell Joe Savery talked about it over and over last night. And they got beat. Twice. And Savery said everything but promise the thing wont happen again. Rice is my pick for champions. They OOZE confidence and they were here last year. Team to beat.

Ok, people ya'll turn away, I'll talk about Louisville. First person to yell that I hate the Cards is getting smacked. Anyway, I'm part of the Louisville media, so let's get to that Cardinal 9. Watched them at practice this morning. It was light, just some Batting Practice. The media did interviews and the like before everything got started. The guys seemed loose and joked around, but not as much as after the Rice game. More business-like you could say, but not robotic. I find that interesting for a team that plays so loose when facing elimination. It's going to be interesting to see if they come out against Carolina like they did against Mississippi State. Luckily for Louisville, their best attribute is jumping out early and often with runs. Rice sprung a big 2nd inninng on UNC yesterday and they couldn't recover. If Louisville can jump out like they have been, they could live to see another day. But with all of UL's best pitchers having thrown, I'm expecting a closer game.

So if you want some predictions, I think Louisville wins tomorrow against UNC. I'm not saying anything about a potential Rice matchup...yet. I want to see how UL does tomorrow before spouting off.
The crowds have been consistent here at Rosenblatt, and last I heard attendance was up for last year. Credit that to Louisville and UC-Irvine, the fresh blood of the series. Fresh blood always travels big because eveyone's excited. Although Cal State Fullerton seems to have rented a few houses and is set up nicely.
That's all I got for now. Check back later to see if I've got anything else but I'm hoping that at some point I actually find something to do in this town!!! Not being 21 sucks. Ok, enough of my complaining. Check back later, or just e-mail if you've got specific questions. Kennethcolston@uky.edu is the e-mail. Oh and whoever is putting in pictures... FIND ANOTHER GOOD ONE! THANKS!

Sports Mob Report
We are in hour one of The Sports Mob. Pac Man Jones is in more trouble. Quincy Wilson of the Bengals got into trouble at a wedding. The Bengals who were a great team a few years ago are now really just a joke.
Angel Cabrera is the fouth straight international player to win the US Open. Is anyone a fan of nobodys winning majors? If it isnt a big name will anyone really even care?

His nickname is "The Duck" Look at Cabrera's face now because you will forget about it tomorrow. I guess he did show some toughness (if you can use the term toughness in golf) by not folding under the pressure of having Tiger Woods directly behind you. Angel Cabrera played well enough to win but really who cares? I want to see a Tiger-Phil-Vijay battle every week. Those story lines never get boring to me.
Did the tougher course help Cabrera more than it hurt Tiger? Not having as many par 5's took away some of Tiger's power game. He still did manage to finish second.
Katherine just called in from Omaha. Right now things are going well. She said the word is people are suprised to see Louisville there but are happy to see a new team in the tournament. People are saying that Louisville gave Rice one of the toughest games of their season.
The SEC claims that they are the best baseball conference in the nation. So are they just shooting bull. Mississippi State was the only SEC team to make the College World Series this year, and they went 2 and out.
Kentucky beat Tennessee in the football all star game. Two University of Louisville signees had good games.Doug Beaumont had 90yds on 11 carries and another 83yds receiving.Vic Anderson tied and all star scoring record with 3 tds. Kentucky won the game 38-24.
Was Phil complaining too much about the course? If you play golf for a living do you really have the option to complain about anything? Seriously, golf is not a poor man's sport. Too become a professional you pretty much have to be able to play golf everyday. Which means you need to be able to afford a membership to a golf club. If you are able to afford the membership year in and year out, chances are you haven't had a very tough life. So really all you can say to Phil is S.T.F.U.(Think about it you'll figure it out). If he felt he was to injured to deal with that course then he just shouldn't have played.

The Louisville baseball team is one of the hottest hitting teams going into and playing in the College World Series in recent history other than the second game in the Super Regional where they lost 3-2 They have have scored 9, 20, 10, and 12 runs in each of those other games. North Carolina had to use 8 diffferent pitchers against Rice in their last game so they may not have that many available in the game against Louisville, which might mean trouble for the Tar Heels.
Fred Cowgill is now on the line. Fred tried to keep track of Louisville baseball while he was on vacation. The goods news is Louisville won a game in the College World Series. Rice actually eliminated in their first CWS in 1997 without winning a game. Louisville has now proven it belongs here and there are hopes of many returns. The CWS may never become a main stream sport, most can compare it to the way people view the Olympics. It is something that when you are in it, it will motivate the region to get involved. Don't really expect the baseball teams to over take basketball and football talk.
The Kragthorpe-Cowgill "Scramble for a Cure" charity golf event is coming up and there are still spots open if you want to enter. For more information go to this webiste http://www.scrambleforacure.org/.
Thank God we don't have to talk about the NBA finals anymore. If anyone was listening to the melee a few days ago heard John Renshaw go off about the horrible shooting by so called professional ball players. The stat that stood out for him was 15 for 59 shooting. Those sound like stats of streetball NBA wannabes. The draft is coming up and everyone knows that Oden and Durant are going 1-2 but who will be 3? Rob thinks it should be Al Horford out of Florida, and it really is hard to argue the point. I think Horford and Brewer are easily the two best Florida prospects. I think whoever wastes a pick on Noah is going to be very, very disapointed. Taurean Green will probably drop into the second round and could be a steal. That guy is so quick and a great defender. Here is a site that goes in depth on the Orlando Pre-Draft camp http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2094.
This could be a make or break recruiting year for the University of Kentucky football program. The Cats are going to lose a lot of "skill" positions after this year. Do the Cats have a legit shot at Aaron Boyd the brother of former Wildcat Shane Boyd? Boyd is a 6-5 195 receiver.
Derrick Jasper has hurt his knee. Bad news for the basketball Wildcats. Jasper could be out for a few months.
Here is the "Lazy Tuesday" a video made by Kentucky fan Daniel Solzman. This was considered the worst thing on the internet. Check it out and decide for yourself. http://one.revver.com/watch/15541/format/flv/affiliate/5590.
By Derrick Johnson

It's another vacation, i mean business trip week for the Big EZ. With the big guy out of town, the Monday Evening Quarterbacks, Kevin Otting and Dugan Ryan stepped in along with Brad Knoop to host the most popular sports talk show on the radio waves today.
The guys lead off with college world series talk. The Cardinal 9 is still alive and swinging in the series with a game against UNC coming up on Tuesday. They discussed how the baseball scene has kept the local sports fan busy this late in June and how much fun the games are to watch.
The NBA Finals were next up on the discussion table. The guys tossed around the fact that the games were very boring and not fun to watch. The talk fizzled out after s short period of time though.
Kevin recapped his weekend, from what he could remember. He went to the Louisville Fire game on Saturday night and then ended up at Bud's Tavern in Lively Shively
Superstitions in baseball wrapped up the final minute of the first segment.
Sean Moth, Louisville baseball, football, and basketball announcer, joined the show for the next segment. The guys wanted to get a feel for the atmosphere in Omaha along with the feelings of the team out there right now. Moth obliged telling them it was like a circus atmosphere, a lot like Derby. He was then off to the local Air Force base with the team to take a tour after a morning practice.
After technical difficulties, the final segment of the hour jumped into the US Open, and Angel Cabrera's smoking and tossing his butts onto the fairway. The guys didnt have a problem with it because it they do it too.
Hour 2 started out with WLKY reporter Fred Cowgill joining the guys to discuss U of L baseball. He was on his way home from a week in Destin. Talk ranged from the upcoming game with UNC to Tom Jurich's job as U of L athletic director. Everyone agrees he has done a fantastic job building up every program at U of L. They also agreed he is very gracious, giving the credit to all of his coaches. It is no joke, he has put U of L athletics on a national stage since he has been here.
The next segment focused on college mascot nicknames with Dugan naming some interesting ones found on a website, http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/. Somehow, the talk switched to college memories of Dugan and Brad at WKU.
Dugan then tried to get some free pizza from Tubby's Pizza by doing an impromptu advertisement for the restaurant on air.
Brad then brought up Barry Bonds hitting his 748th home run at Fenway Park on Sunday. Brad wanted to knoiw why he was booed saying he is breaking a major record and should get credit for his accomplishment.
Tom Lane, Fox-41 sportscaster, joined the show for the next segment. Knoop asked him if the CWS is anything like the Little League World Series from a few years ago. Tom couldnt answer it because he didnt follow the LLWS but did say the people around the city of Omaha were proud to have it there and make it a terrific atmosphere.
Hour 3 started out with a music discussion about MC Hammer and Eddie Vedder, yeah I know its a little wierd. Old Skewl and Travis called in with a little karaoke recap from Saturday night with Kevin. He then reminisced about the old days in Lively Shively.
ON A SIDE NOTE, THE PIZZA IS HERE. THANKS TUBBY'S PIZZA!!
Joey Adams from triplecrownselections.com joined us for a Saturday recap and some baseball talk. Joey played at UL and was elated to see the Cards winning. Stephen Foster Saturday was this weekend and Joey recapped his day for us. It was another great weekend with Chelokee winning another race at Churchill pushing Joey to say he may be one of the best 3 year olds on the country. You can catch Joey right here on 1570 the Zone on Saturday mornings from 9-10.
The last and most important segment of the show was spent rambling on about a number of off-the-wall topics with callers chiming in on many topics. Indiana Tony talked about IU football and Intern Andy called in previewing his show for Saturday morning where he will discuss the Cincy Reds and SEC football.
Join us tomorrow when John Witten, former Rice basketball and baseball player, will be in the studio along with other guests right here on 1570 the Zone from 10-1.

Just finished up from the post-game press conference at Rosenblatt and the Cards live to see another day, well more like two. The Cards will take on the North Carolina/Rice loser on Tuesday. Your father always told you the early bird gets the worm and it seems like the Cardinal 9 live on that philosophy. Just like the Rice game, the team got up big in a hurry, the only difference is Justin Marks shutdown performance. Up 8-0, through the first five innings is awesome when playing such talent, trust me the Bulldogs are talented, is amazing for a TRUE FRESHMAN. Only after taking a shot to the knee did Marks falter, giving up a three run jack.
In fact, the Mississippi State coach stopped mid-sentence during their press conference to just give all the credit in the wonder to Marks. That's real big. Of course, Logan Johnson and Chris Dominguez just smashed the ball today and that doesn't hurt either. When asked during the UL press conference about his sudden power streak (8 HRs in the postseason, only 7 during the regular) Chris replied with this: "During the season, I was up and down. Now I'm finding my swing." Yeah, I think you've found your swing Chris.
Oh and Marks confirmed that the knee is fine. He'll be good to pitch when needed, although I doubt he shows up Tuesday because of the innings he went today. But if the Cards continue on afterwards, expect Marks to show up.
Oh and I can tell you for sure every U of L fan was praying that the big lead wasn't surrendered like against Rice and everyone was holding their breath once Marks gave up that 3-run HR. But Kyle Hollander and Skylar Meade basically shut down the rest of the game to seal the deal for the Cardinals. Pitching is everything in every league in baseball. If you need any evidence, game 1 and today's game is pretty clear. Against Rice, the Cards smacked the ball but got smacked back. Today's the Cards smacked again and the pitching staff stopped the return.
The guys aren't even the least bit nervous facing elimination, which isn't a surprise since it seems to be the team's best friend right now... following them everywhere. But playing loose has been a positive for the Cards and it shows.
Side Note: Louisville has scored 99 runs in 10 postseason games. 9.9 runs a game. I know they use aluminum bats... but dang. The offense is tearing up any pitching staff it sees so it's obvious that the Cardinals run will come down to how their own staff holds up.
And for those keeping score at home, Louisville still thinks it let the Rice game get away... but when asked at the press conference, McDonnell wasn't exactly hoping the Owls fell back to them on Tuesday. It wasn't a fear thing, but you know the way Rice keep at the Cards, no one is going to jump at the chance to see them again.
That's all the notes for now... I'll keep posting up things when my laptop decides to work. With the Cards, winning it looks like me and the crew will be around until at least Tuesday. So keep checking in to the blog zone for updates, check the website for any game stories/previews and listen in Monday and Tuesday for more call-ins. Any questions about anything can be sent to kennethcolston@uky.edu and I'll get back as soon as I can. The hotel's internet is funky but be patient and I'll try to answer back asap! See ya'll around.

Dang, Omaha is HOT!!!! Instant sweat... and that's for EVERYONE. Speaking of Hot... there are some magnificent ladies in attendance. Omaha and the teams in attendance have made sure the trotted out their finest. It's really the best of all worlds, with the local ladies looking good, Friday you had the Southern Belles... from Carolina, Mississippi, Texas and of course Kentucky! Today is West Coast days... and I could sure use me a California beauty. We might have to cut this short so I can go meet some friends tailgating...
Anyway, great 24 hours so far. As I said on the Big EZ show, the Louisville gear is coming out of the woodworks and it's all the local/longtime attendees just "pulling for the underdog". Honestly the first five people we tried to interview weren't even close to the Louisville area! America really loves it's underdogs in sports. It was great seeing the Burton's too. Nice family, Daniel's brother is a great guy, as is the rest of his family! Interesting tidbit, as we had Daniel's Mom, Bro and sister with us... Daniel's father was making it on TV!! Just a media-savvy family I guess.
I wont talk about the game, while I'm sure it's okay now since it's been 24 hours, the NCAA gave us 2 good pages on blogging. I'd rather not be ejected. But it was rough to say the least. Actually spent a good portion of the game in the stands, about 10 rows from first base. It's an interesting group of people who attend these games, you of course have the big fans... but just know they aren't sitting that close. The rest are usually local people who pick and find something or some player on a team and then jump on the bandwagon. Chris Cates got talked up huge... lots of love from the old ladies... if that means anything. It was fun splitting time from up in the press box sitting to all the big news companies, to talking to a 60-year old man whose an Omaha lifer.
Whoa, can't believe I forgot this... the crowd's here are HUGE! Take your final four and bowl games and stuff them. The crowd here RIVAL the DERBY! Seriously. Every front yard and parking lot is smashed full, cars line the street from the stadium towards downtown for at least 4 miles. And 13th street next to the stadium is lined with vendors. I honestly feel like I'm in a Derby setting. An even more interesting nugget of info... talked with John Bowles a few minutes ago about the crowd and he brought up the Derby/Oaks idea in another sense-- that most of these people get here after the game has started and leave before the game is over. It's like there are here for the party and we know that TONS go to Derby/Oaks without watching or betting one race. Amazing.
Man... I can totally see how a bunch of sportswriter are overweight. The press lounge here is stocked with Coke products and buckets of snacks--popcorn, M&Ms, etc. I'm going to have to take a few laps after I'm finished here. But it's a great setup, kudos to the NCAA for setting us up right. Although I can't leave here until I'm done with the laptop, since the Internet at the hotel is crap. Oh well, free food here anyway.
Went to the Cardinal's practice this morning at East Bellevue High School, sat around and listened to stories from all the sports anchors and writers in Louisville, Kyle Draper, Jody Demling, Bob Domine, Bowles and anyone else you can think of. Lots of interesting "war" stories from Domine and lots of interesting dirt on well-to-do people in the Louisville area, but this isn't TMZ, I won't spill.
Press lounge is getting crowded, it's got TVs to watch the games but all the announcing is from the stadium, it reminds you that's there's a couple seconds TV delay just like radio.
Also went to the post-practice free-for-all press conference at the Louisville hotel. Got some interesting quotes that hopefully I can plug into a brief preview for tomarrow. Just something for you to chew on until it's up... in all the interviews Coach McDonnell and the players kept on the hope that a first game loss isn't doomsday. Citing South Carolina in 2002 and Oregon State last year, the Cards will really excited about their chances against the Bulldogs. Another thing the players were excited about was that the same Hilton the Cards are staying in, Oregon State stayed in last year. Just a little note.
That's all for now, I'm going to hit up 13th street vendors and maybe make some friends out with the tailgaters. Maybe an update before we head back for the hotel tonight, maybe a little something before the game tomarrow. Just keep checking in. Oh and if you have a suggestion for a better blog name...or have any questions or comments, e-mail me at kennethcolston@uky.edu. Thanks!

i am stunned, shocked and sad beyond belief. bit i will not go down with out a fight. i believe!!!
By Derrick Johnson
With Kenny gone to Omaha, I guess this little spot belongs to me today. Ez was late onto the air because the guys at Tailgaters may have been out a little too late partying. Once we got the guy on the scene to wake up, everything turned out just fine.
For the first hour of the show, John Witten joined Ez to discuss the College World Series game. John is graduate of Rice and played baseball and basketball for them. He is also a diehard UofL fan. When asked who he would be rooting for today, he had to side with his alma mater, the Rice Owls.
For the rest of the hour, John and EZ chatted about certain aspects of each team including the Rice pitching staff and the U of L batters. Both agreed it would be a very good game and very competitive.
Hour 2 started with EZ discussing U of L basketball and their latest injuries. Edgar Sosa and Derrick Caracter are both going to be out at least 4-6 weeks, Sosa with a sprained ankle and Caracter with a torn meniscus. EZ brought up that Coach Pitino wasnt worried about the injury to Caracter, but was only worried about his diet.
Howie Lindsey joined us at 11:30. Packed house expected in Omaha. North Carolina has the most fan support. Fans supporting Chris Gates. Dan McDonnell was a member of the biggest under dog in CWS history. Rice has the best pitching staff in CWS. Rice always has draft picks. Rice has the talent to beat anybody. Omaha about the same size as Louisville.
Louisville basketball team. Sosa high anckle sprain. Caracter slightly torn meniscus. Both will be fine for the start of the season.
Katherine and Kenny live from Omaha. Katheriine with Daniel Burton's family. EZ with Kevin Burton, Daniel's brother. Burton family got there yesterday. Everyone having fun. No one nervous. Night life crazy. Reminds Kevin of the Indy 500. Lots of tailgating.
The rest of the show was a mess with Kenny trying to pick up chicks while EZ and Nate encouraging him all the way.
Tune in Monday when Brad Knoop and John Witten will be providing more exciting action on 1570 the Zone.

Thoughts before I take the road to Omaha... on that thought, I'll be posting blogs (non-live, non in-game, mind you) and doing games stories for this weekend. Also, listen in tomarrow as Katherine and I will be calling in before tomarrow's game in the very least. Onto what's on my mind...
1. Rice has great pitchers like USC has Heisman winning QBs...which means it's a pitching factory. The Cardinal 9 wont have the luxury of just trying to out-swing opposing teams like they could in the Regionals and Super Regionals. Low scores is going to be the name of the game, as long as Zack Pitts and Co. can trot out the dominating performances they had in the super regionals. If they can't, Rice does have the bats to make it hurt. So storyline numbero uno for me is if the Cards offense can overcome the Rice pitching, because if they can tack on more than 5 runs I'll be shocked, if they tack on more than 5 and WIN... they just became George Mason regardless if they win another game or not.
2. If the Cardinal 9 does get setback against Rice, how will they rebound? The 10 seniors will help, but not a single player has been even remotely this far. Coach McDonnell has, but he can't go out to the mount or swing the bat. Should be interesting.
3. Will the bright lights of Omaha blind the Cards? Like before mentioned, not a player is used to all this attention and being ranked as low as they were before the regionals, then hosting their our super regional and making it to Omaha... the national media is starting to catch on now, will the Cinderella status humble the Cards into two straight losses?
4. On a more personal note, I'm interested in what type of atmosphere this little Nebraska city can put out. Omaha has held the CWS for a loooong time now, so something must be working. Trust me, if you check back a few times over the weekend, I'll cue you in.
There's probably more I'm looking foward to, but it's getting close to time to hit the road. Make sure to tune in to the blog zone, and listen tomarrow to hear 1570 The Zone live from Omaha!
(P.S. you're still not going to get me to cheer on Louisville, a journalist doesn't take sides. hahahahaha.)
Kenny
I am sorry, but the Herald-Leader sports department just needs a quick little slap on the wrist. This is beginning to become comical.
I am big fans of the Herald. I read their stuff everyday. I am big fans of Mark Story and John Clay, Herald sports columnists. I think Clay's blog is one of the best on the web.
Both have been on my radio show before, and I am truly grateful, and I hope this blog post doesn't sway them from ever coming on my show again, because this has nothing to do with bashing their opinions or the content of their columns.
In fact, I think they should receive just a small portion of the criticism I am about to hand out.
Over the last three weeks, I have seen columns from both Story and Clay that have had really BAD errors in them. Am I nitpicking? Oh, maybe. But when I see two mistakes like these in a matter of weeks, I begin to think that the editor is out to lunch, smoking some crack, or maybe trying to hang Story and Clay out to dry.
What am I talking about? Well, on May 25, Mark Story had a different name for the Louisville Cardinals' wide reciever:
"GOOD NEWS is that Keenan Burton was tabbed as the 14th-best wide receiver in the country (and, if he and Woodson stay healthy, that's way, way low).
BAD NEWS is that Louisville has two wide receivers ranked higher (Henry Douglas eighth and Mario Urrutia 11th) on the same list."
Come on Mark. It's Harry. It makes you look stupid, and I KNOW that you aren't. I hope you punched your editor in the face.
But then, just today (June 14) John Clay made a 20-question list, and missed a number on the list and listed another number twice.
The content of both of these articles was great. Two fine reads. But it makes you just sit back and think "uhhh, come on guys." But the blame should be put mostly on the editor who should FREAKIN proofread? It's one thing if you misspell on a blog, or screw up numerous times on a radio show (that's me). It's entirely another when you have time to write a well-thought-out column, proofread it, proofread it again, give it to an editor for him to proofread, proofread, and proofread again, and then get this.
These errors are not good for the reputation of their sports section, one of which I am still a fan of. Just be careful boys. Proofread your work, because no one else there is.

Mid Day Melee Report
The show is wide open today hoping for a lot of phone calls. Homer Bailey is making is second start for the Cincinnati Reds starting at 1235.
Johnny is holding a US Open pool he said that he had 27 people in this thing. Speaking of the US Open espn.com had an article of best players that have not yet won a major. Number one on that list is Adam Scott. I am a big fan of Scott but he seems to fold on day 3 and never really puts any scare into anyone on the final day. For a look at the list visit here. http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/usopen07/columns/story?columnist=sobel_jason&id=2894444
Isnt Sergio Garcia one of the most over hyped players in any sport? The guy hasnt really done anything. I guess he plays well in the Ryder Cup but that's about it. Right now he is 9 over in the Open. What a joke. Tiger is at +2 after 16 holes.
Johnny is talking about the most over hyped athletes and the top three most hated sportscasters. My top 3 worst broadcasters for me is in this order. 1.Dick Vitale. Just hearing this guys voice is like nails on a chalkboard. And you can just hear the erection he gets while talking about Duke or Coack K. Number 2 Lee Corso. My first two picks are college guys. I love college sports, but I can't stand these two old loonies, who have really just turned into clowns. It really is just a pain to watch these guys. The number 3 on my can't stand list would be Michael Irvin not that he is terrible at his job, because he knows what he is talking about and makes great points. I just cant stand the way he brings race into pretty much everything. He also seems to always take the side of the athlete that is under scrutiny. Yes, Michael I know you smoked crack and for the most part you've gotten past it, but Terell Owens is a joke, and a jerk. I dont need you preaching about his "great personality" when he never shows it. I dont need you taking Michael Vick's side saying give him a chance to prove himself. Or mentioning that McNabb is getting a raw deal from the media. The guy can't stay on the field.
Tiger just finshed the first round 1 over. The leader right now is -2.
So who are the most overrated athletes. Dale Jr. is one that comes to mind. Tracey McGrady is another. Michelle Wie? well maybe. Overhyped? Yes. She is very talented and still very young. Here is a list from espn page 2 for most overrated of all time http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/alltimeoverrated.html
Quick Break be right back.
Stright to phone calls about worst broadcasters. Isiah Thomas I guess did a few games because the caller hated when he worked with Costas. I missed Thomas so I have no opinion on him.
Digger Phelps is a name that just came up for worst broadcasters. I didnt really mind Digger until he decided to match his tie with his highliter. Ahmad Rashad is another name. Wow! I never even thought of Rashad, but the caller is right. He is annoying by dropping Jordan's name every chance he gets.
I have to go answer phones now. Peace out.

It's another Thirsty Thursday here on the Big EZ Show and the first day of the US Open golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club.
EZ recapped his night of little league baseball watching and reality tv viewing. Congrats to Cousin EZ on the big win last night.
Next up, EZ got back on the Brian Bennett debate wondering if the C-J was still tooting it's own horn about being kicked out. EZ then talked about how a New York Times writer who was written his second or third article about the blogging ejection. Nate and EZ then got into an arguement about whether or not EZ would walk into the press box and openly blog to get at the NCAA.
Back from the break, EZ got all patriotic by playing America The Beautiful and talking about Flag Day. EZ then talked about David Stern saying there has been good attendance at the NBA Finals, but EZ wrote that off as saying that of course people are going to see a finals live if they are forking out so much money to do so. EZ wanted David Stern to stop the spin, because the ratings are below rock bottom. EZ wondered if listeners just turn him off when he talks about the NBA.
Callers then rang in with their ideas for changing the NBA and reinforcing EZ's idea that when he talks NBA, no one listens.
Hour 2 teed off on the U.S. open starting today. EZ had a problem with people who complain about the pars on long courses. EZ then let his multiple personalities loose and started talking in toungues. Everyone in the studio tried to run, but he somehow locked the doors.
EZ then brought up a column in the Hearld-Leader listing the biggest questions for UK... with UofL questions sprinkled in. Before going to the list, EZ blasted the H-L for the mistakes it always has in it's columns and lists and says that they have editors so why so many mistakes? EZ then read off the 20 questions (with no 8 and two 12's). Here's the entire list: http://kentucky.com/269/story/97285.html.
Before the end of Hour 2, EZ took a few callers on Woodson's Heisman capabilities and a few other UK/UL football tidbits. EZ then got back into the topic,
Hour 3 started with EZ going back to the pigskin and saying Andre Woodson just won't be on the Heisman candidate because UK wont have entire wins. Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com joined the show to give his daily horse racing information. Joey had a monster day yesterday, so hopefully you use his picks from TripleCrownSelections.com! Joey gave some of his picks for today on-air but if you want all of Joey's knowledge you can have it for only 5 bucks at TripleCrownSelections.com.
Before the break, EZ gave a quick U.S. Open update with the Masters music.... hey, it's golf.
Back from the break, it's another golf update... let's see... yes the grass is growing on the course!!! Yipee!! Then Rob from the Sports Mob called in from Thorton's where they are giving away Bats and Fire tickets and plenty of eRev.
Jerry Bonkowski, NASCAR writer for Yahoo Sports joined the show and slammed on the gas right into the Junior to Hendrick debate. EZ and Jerry talked about the fan reaction, Kyle Busch's next move, Junior's number and all the fallout from Junior's move to Hendrick.
The final segment started off with talk about LeBron James' second kid finally coming in. Forget his first name his middle and last work well, Maximus James. DO NOT CHALLENGE THIS KID TO A GLADITOR LIKE DUEL! Watch out King James, Maximus is an awesome name to the throne. EZ then congratulated A-Rod on a good night, since everyone esle kills him when he does bad. Then EZ said A-Rod tearing it up is the reason why the Yanks are so hot.
Tomarrow check out Big EZ at Tailgaters from 10am-1pm and listen tomarrow for Katherine and I's coverage in OMAHA!

First of all, congrats and good luck to the Louisville baseball team. You have made this city very proud. They should be in Omaha as I sit and write this. I hope they do not get awestruck by the atmosphere of the event and focus on advancing in the tourney.
Next, I want to discuss the US Open, which starts Thursday. I think this year's event will produce a lot of high scores based on the conditions and the length of the course. I have never played a 600+ yard par 5 or a 270+ yard par 3 but I think par on them is a great score. I will be tuned in to see how the best players in the world play the course, or how the course plays them. As for a winner, I am going to go with Adam Scott, who has yet to win a major tournament. He has been playing well and I see him breaking through this week. As a fallback, I guess you can always bet on Tiger being there on Sunday.

Finally, I want to give my view about the big story of the day, Dale Earnhardt Jr. signing to drive for Hendrick Racing. I think this is the kind of move that will move Dale Jr from a good driver to an elite driver. He now will have the best equipment, the best minds, and the best people around him that money can buy. Now, Jr can focus on racing cars and forget about everything else. He will learn from his teammates and will become a better driver becasue of it. I am a big Dale Jr fan and think this move will turn out to be the best thing he has ever done.

It's Hump Day on the Big EZ Show with a jam-packed show.
The show tipped off with NBA Finals talk. EZ watched the game at a local bar and thought it was a good game but thought Lebron got fouled on his last second shot attempt. EZ was very upset about the no-call. EZ just sent the full-court press on the finals, saying he wished it was more exciting and about all range of topics about the Finals. EZ took a caller that complained about the days/times that the Finals have been on TV. EZ agreed, saying some of the late times prevented a range of demographics from watching the game. EZ understood the west coast problem, but said if all they miss is the first quarter, it's no biggie because EVERYONE in the nation would be watching the second half.
After a break, EZ talked about Preston Knowles being kicked off the Kentucky All-Star team for violating team rules. EZ then talked about how Pitino goes after the bullying, fighting type thinking he can change the guy. Just like the girl who loves the badasses in high school because she thinks she can change them.
Hour 2 started with EZ playing Dale Junior's press conference announcing that he will race for Hendrick Motorsports next season. EZ and Nate then discussed if this move will turn NASCAR into Baseball, with one or two teams spending whatever to get the top drivers. Nate, EZ and Derrick then got into a debate about how this is going to Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Junior.
Next up, EZ got into the Samardo Samuels conversation and saying how the kid had the Cards third on his list before this weekend and after a visit to the school, has now commitment to the Red and White.
Back a from a break, the phone lines were still lit up with one caller asking about The Reds up north, Junior going to Hendrick, and other random events.
Hour 3 started with EZ talked about the UK-UofL basketball game being moved to Jan. 5 instead of playing in December. Callers rang in with their own beliefs about the movement of the game.
Joey Adams from Triplecrownselections.com joined the show to discuss the Churchill card for today and to preview the Stephen Foster races on Saturday. It is the biggest day of the second half of the spring meet at Churchill and will attract a large crowd. Many good horses will be running Saturday and it should make for some good payoffs. Joey then answered an email question about why so many horses have scratched this year, saying weather and horse illness on the morning of the race may play a factor in scratching a horse. For more horse racing analysis, listen on Saturday mornings from 9a-10a right here on 1570 the Zone, Louisville's local sports radio.
Segment 2 began with a post relationship checklist of what to do and what not to do from askmen.com. Nate and EZ tossed the points bcak and forth and agreed and disagreed with many of the points. Neither is planning on using the list any time soon (as far as they know), but they both agree the list is good to have.
EZ then brought up a top 10 list on askmen.com about the top 10 NBA players of 2006-2007. To view the list, visit http://www.askmen.com/sports/fitness_top_ten_100/102_fitness_list.html .
EZ had a caller want a US Open update and EZ obliged: THE US OPEN STARTS TOMORROW.
The final segemnt of the show was basically a wrap up of what was put on the table throughout the entire show today. EZ touched on Justin Verlander's no-hitter last night saying these events do not get the proper coverage they deserve.
Join us tommorrow for fun and exciting talk right here on 1570 The Zone from 10a-1p.

The Mid Day Melee Report
Starting a little late following the show. I had my own selfish needs I had to take care. Oh, the life of an intern.
We had some technical difficulties in the first hour of the show. That is going to happen when you do a show on-site instead of in studio. Johnny and Nate are doing a great job though. Talk about on-site Nate is at Lucky Strike at 4th street live which is just a stone throw away, while Renshaw is still in Houston. Hopefully it wont be too much longer before Johnny makes it to Louisville for good. As for now he will continue to, literally,"phone it in."
The Freak said that Fox news reported a driver on a bus toss two girls off. I'm talking forcefully thrown from the bus for french kissing. I little off topic, but hey that is what the melee is about.
Nate missed the Lou Pinella suspension while he has doing Marine work. The Sweet Lou suspension was something to talk about, but the real story was Mississippi Braves minor league manager flipping out and army crawling to the rosin bag at the mound and tossing it like a grenade. He also pick up 3rd base and 2nd base and chucked them into the out field. Lou was just being Lou, yelling, screaming, and kicking his has...etc. The problem was that he bumbed the umpire. From the looks of it, it was an accident, yet the league felt he went to far so on came the suspension.
We have reached the top of the hour so a quick break and then we are back.
Nate has more questions on what went on while he was gone. Are commercials giving people seizures? All that damn Asian animation. It is so high tech or eyes just cant handle it. There is such thing as too much of a good thing.
Nate missed the TB guy. What a douchbag this guy was. He was advised against flying, yet he did it anyway. If I was on that plane I probably would have thrown crap at him. Supposedly this guy said he was never advised not to fly. He is a lawyer and his dad was a lawyer so I guess they found some freedom from any trouble.
Adam "Pacman" Jones drops his appeal for suspension. Probably the best move he has made through this entire ordeal. Goodell has said that if he follows all of Goodells rules he may get to play after 10 games.
Apparently Michael Vick, might not be in as much trouble as people think because this could be his first offense. Goodells punishments are really harsh on repeat offenders.
A man just walked past Nate at 4th Street Live wearing capri pants!? You have got to wonder what goes through people's minds when they choose their wardrobe.
Here is a question which is the best golf tournament. Is it one of the majors or maybe The Players Championship. My choice is the match play championship. I love the bracket set up. It really is set up so anyone can just play outside themselves and make a huge upset. Golf is a totally different sport playing just one man instead of an entire field.
Going back to Lebron's perfomance in game 5 vs. the Pistons. It was great, but he hasnt seemed to show up against in the finals.
Quick break...........................and we're back
Dale Jr. is going to announce tommorow which team he will be racing for. ESPN says that it is not official yet, but it is going to be Hendrick Racing. In the IRL a rookie became the first black driver to win. Congrats to him.
Urban Meyer is ranked the 12th best coach? Who exactly are the 11 that are better than him. Pete Carroll is #1 of course to check out the list go to http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=200861.
What baseball players in todays game are locks for the hall of fame? Some names come to mind. A-Rod, Mariano Rivera, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, if Albert Pujols keeps it up he should be there. If you can think of more let me know this is a good arguement category. For those who will actually be eligible coming up in the next few years click this site and tell me who makes it in. http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hof_weekend/future_elections.htm
Im done for the day keep reading and send some feedback.

It's Tuesday... and nothing special happens on Tuesday, unless it's the Big EZ Show live from Lucky Strike at 4th Street!
EZ kicked off the show saying there was a lot to cover and then jumping right into WNBA star Chamnique Holdsclaw mid-season retirement. Saying he'll only spend 5 seconds on the subject, he actually spent 15. I counted. Derrick and EZ then went on to talk about John Daly's martial issues and discussing which male and female athlete they would want to party with if given the chance.
After a break, a few callers wanted to give their take on which athletes they would want to party with. Nate then brought up the Sopranos final show, much to EZ's delight. Nate and EZ debated on whether or not as a writer you want the last show to be the only thing people remember. Nate and EZ then debated whether or not Tony was knocked off.
Back from the second break of the hour, EZ notified listeners of the time change for UL's game on Friday and how the bracket plays out. Scott Clark and EZ talked about how tough the Cards bracket is. A few callers weighed in on the issue themselves before ending Hour 1.
Hour 2 started with Scott Clark and EZ talking about Brian Bennett's ejection for blogging. Callers brought up more athletes they would want to party with while EZ and Scott continued to throw out athletes that would be good party pals. EZ and Scott then talked about the impossible task LeBron James and the Cavs have in front of them. Scott and EZ then went to discuss more of the series with Game 3 tonight in Cleveland.
Back from the first break of the hour, EZ and Scott got into a conversation about WWE women and their favorite TV shows. EZ then brought up a fact that 37% of working dad's would rather be a stay-at-home dad. EZ says there are 160,000 stay at home Dad's in America. EZ said he thought it was a death sentence, where as Scott embraced it. Scott and EZ went back and forth even involving callers into the issues.
Howie Lindsey from CardinalSportsReport joined the show to talk about the UofL track team finishing in the top 10 at the NCAAs. Next up was the favorite topic of everyone lately... the Cardinal 9.
Hour 3... still live from Lucky Strike! EZ started off with the Reds huge ratings for an Indians-Reds game this weekend on FSN Ohio. EZ said the Reds beat out every network show on Friday and beat out everything again on Saturday. EZ then told listeners that UofL was no longer taking ticket requests for Omaha.
Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com joined the show to tell EZ the news that overall, The Belmont sucked this year. TV viewers were down, overall betting was down and that even the filly winning the race didn't help that much. EZ and Joey then talked a little about the future of horse racing and what will fuel the sport. Joey then ran down the projected schedules for the top 4 horses right now, Rags to Richies, Street Sense, Curlin and Hard Spun. For all your handicapping needs, check out Joey's on-fire picks at TripleCrownSelections.com
Back from a break, Nate and EZ got into a discussion about if Louisville should be proud of Larry Birkhead. EZ then announced the hot chick tally at 21 while Nate said Scott Clark had lower standards so the numbers are messed up. Scott then came on and said the famous Henk would be co-hosting with him on Friday which got Henk to call in and throwdown on EZ's show.
The final segment included more Sopranos talk, with EZ finally giving his take. Some last minute phone calls on who to party with before EZ said that UofL isn't taking ticket orders anymore.

Folks, we officially have ONE listener accounted for... and she's a female! Hell yeah!
Her name, as far as we know, is "Spookegal" (thanks John from Floyds Knobs for the intel).
Click here to see her page on LouisvilleMojo.com. Look under her picture on the page in the "a little about me" section. That's where she shows us her love! She looks taken but, fellow zonies, if she's not, she obviously (by the look of things) enjoys long walks on the beach at sunset.
Here's to you Spookegal!

Andrew Wenk
With the NBA season coming to an end within the next week or two as the Spurs lead the NBA finals 2-0 over the Cavs I wanted to see what your fondest memory or highlight was during this years playoffs. The Warriors with probably the biggest upset in NBA history against the Mavericks, the suspension of Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for the pivotal game 5 in the Western Conference Semi-finals, or even maybe the Cavs coming back from 2-0 against the Pistons to make it to the NBA finals. What or who stood out the most?
Hey guys it's Andrew Wenk. I am the NBA Zone reporter and appreciate everyone who has taken the time to read the articles and recaps of the NBA games that I have written.
I wanted to start up a NBA blog for the draft that is approaching as well as all the events that will be transpiring during the off-season.
I wanted to start off by asking who you think will be the number three pick in this years draft. We all know the top two picks will be Greg Oden and Kevin Durant respectively, but who does Atlanta pick at number 3? Do you go with guard Mike Conley, gamble on the biggest international name in this years draft, Yi Jianlian from China, or Al Horford whose stock has risen since the championship game. Or possibly take somebody else? If your Atlanta what do you do?

First off I want thank Johnny "The Freak" Renshaw for carrying me on the Midday Melee today.
We are now in the first hour of The Sports Mob.
If you haven't been listening the talk of the day, as it should be is Louisville Baseball. The Cards dominated in the deciding game against OK State. 20-2!!!! Wow, the Cardinals bats where on fire. I am sure everyone on this station is talking about the baseball team so I will talk about something different.
Rob is bringing up the French Open. Roger Federer cannot be considered the greatest tennis player all-time if there is a tournament he cannot win. The competetion he faces is nowhere close to what Pete Sampras had to face in his prime.
New topic Michelle Wie finished dead last this weekend. This girl was spent so much time and energy in trying to compete with the men, and she can't even compete with the professional women. Who is to blame for her career collapse? Her dad maybe for forcing her to turn pro? Or the hype machine ESPN? Her career is a train wreck right now. It will take quite some time for her to turn this thing around.
Demarr Johnson of the Denver Nuggets is arrested and tazered at a strip club, and in related news, the Cincinnati Bengals have offered Demarr Johnson a 3 year deal.
Don't look now but the Yanks have won 6 straight games and A-Rod is still on fire. Roger Clemens made his season debut for the Yanks and he pitched.....OK. Six innings gave up 5 hits 3 runs and had 7 strikeouts. It was good, not great. Yankee bats are on fire right now so I'm not sure a 4.50 era is going to be what the Yanks need to get into the playoffs.
The National League Central is embarassing. The St. Louis Cardinals(my team by the way) are 6 games under .500 yet are sitting in second place only 5 1/2 games back of the Brew Crew. Homer Bailey made his major league debut on Friday. Not a bad debut. 5 innings gave up 3 runs. The moment of the game that stood out to me was his first plate apperance. He stood back looked at the giant scoreboard to read that he was the youngest pitcher to start for the Reds in so and so years. That moment of realizing he made it was incredible. That is why I love baseball.
The Reds-Indians game yesterday was fantastic. CC Sabathia threw 9 scoreless innings and Aaron Harang threw 7 scoreless. The Reds won the game in 12 innings 1-0 great, great game.
What did everyone think of the Sopranos finally. It's a big topic. Not for me though. I have never seen the show. I dont throw out the extra cash for HBO.
If there is one thing that I have learned over the course of the past, I don't know, year or so, it's this--Don't piss off the sports blogging community. Usually, it's a general rule when it comes to sports media members. We usually take up for each other when our access is denied or treated unfairly in any other way.
But sports bloggers take it to a whole 'nother level.
Take Brian Bennett for instance, friend of the show, and (if you haven't heard by now) nailed by the NCAA for blogging from Jim Patterson Stadium about the game.
Here's the thing--The C-J does this ALL THE TIME. At regular-season games, at NCAA Tournament basketball games, at the Orange Bowl. And I've done it as well. Is it legal? And how can the NCAA police this on a regular basis. There is WAY too much gray-area when it comes to blogging. Regardless of what people say, it's NOT LIVE! It upsets me that it has gotten to this.
And now, the other blogging sites are starting to catch on, some big and some small (links are below). This will get some serious pub. Good for the Courier-Journal. BAD for the NCAA.
SOME LINKS: - The Big Lead: The NCAA Hates Bloggers - John Clay, Lexington Herald-Leader: C-J reporter/blogger kicked out of press box - Editor & Publisher: 'Courier-Journal' Sportswriter Loses Credential For Game Due to Blogging - Kentucky.com: Reporter ejected for blogging - More Than Derby: Blogger booted by NCAA
What an unbelievable atmosphere at Jim Patterson Stadium over the weekend. It's one that I will never forget. You got to remember, we were hosting the Sweet 16 of college baseball, and the Cards were playing the 14th-ranked team in the country and a top five offense in the OK State Cowboys.
I was lucky enough to go up on the roof of the Frazier Rehab Center which overlooks Jim Patterson Stadium with my family and the people from the Cardinal Athletic Fund. Very nice people. It was a blast, and truly an experience I won't forget. I didn't want to leave!

It's a Monday Edition of the Big EZ show and there's a lot to talk about with a big sports weekend!
EZ talked about Game 3 yesterday and everything he thought about the Cardinal 9 making it to the College World Series. EZ invited callers to call in and give their take about the magical run the U of L baseball team has made.
EZ then asked if it was the right time for rival fans to cheer for a rival team that is doing well. Callers kept calling in and saying why they could or couldn't root for a rival, even if it was just baseball.
Rick Bozich then joined the show for his weekly Monday conversation. EZ asked Bozich what exactly happened and then asked Bozich what he thought about what the Louisville baseball team has been doing. Bozich was excited and compared it to the 1998 UK basketball champions.
After a few more callers about cheering for a rival, EZ wrapped up the debate.
Hour 3 started with Joey Adams talking horse racing and the Belmont with EZ. Talking about if there will ever be a Rags to Richies/Street Sense showdown and who might be Horse of the Year, Joey and EZ went back and forth. Make sure to check out TripleCrownSelections.com for all your Churchill handicapping needs.
Back from a break, Keith Conrad, legal junkie for 1570 discussing the tossing of the C-J reporter from yesterday's game. Going over what issues the C-J could use and everything esle surrounding Brian Bennett's ejection from the game for blogging during the game.
The last segment of the show Fred Cowgill joined us while on vacation! Cowgill and EZ talked about the rise of the Cardinal 9 with Cowgill calling it a Cinderella story. Cowgill talked about maybe making it to Omaha if the Cards make it through the first weekend. EZ then talked a little bit about the Sopranos and the letdown of an the ending.
Check back tomarrow 10am-1pm for more Big EZ show!
P.S. Sorry for the lack of details, about halfway through hour 3, the computer decided to take a big crap and lose all the work.

i am so furiously pissed off. i am not mad at the cardinal baseball team, i am just pissed that they lost, and most of all how they lost. i took 13 pages of notes on the game. i was forced to listen to it on the internet. man, that play by play guy is a dork. when a card pitcher would throw a strike he would frequently say, good morning and good afternoon-- it was stupid, i could kind of understand it if it was the third strike, but he would do it in the middle of the count. here are my thoughts on the game
it was the fastest 6 innings i think i have ever heard..... big ups to FRESHMAN justin marks 1 hit i believe, the solo shot to home run machine corey brown. even though he went 3-2 on a ton of batters walked 4 and hit a guy, he pitched an awesome game. he picked to people off of first base- unreal
interesting that both pitchers were named justin, and that both 3rd basemen made CRITICAL errors
the home plate umpire had a very wierd strile zone. he loved calling striles on breaking balls but not fast balls.
i think what shocked me the most was that boomer and burton were thrown out trying to steal second.the cowboy catcher had only thrown out 4-32 runners all year!!!!! and burton was out by a mile.
i have never been a part of a game with more fly balls to one player, corey brown, at the very least he caught 8 fly balls but i think it was 10
11 freaking cowboys were drafted yesterday... but how about the wee man chris cates, 5'3 , the shortest player in all of college baseball, 283 teams, getting drafted by the twins
several cards got drafted including junior zack pitts-- if he dosent come back for his senior year i will cry
hard to beat tristain magnusun's week, up until today. he throws the final pitch to seal the series againsr missouri. he turns 22, and he gets drafted. but of course he gave up the game tying home run to ty wright, a second team all american,
so top of the 4th , 1 out, marks gives up a solo shot to corey brown... he came in with 42 homers and thank god it was a solo shot...
bottom of the 4th was a missed oppourtunity for the cardinal 9, isaha howes singled, justin friend, the pokes pitcher balked, so howes moves to second base with 2 outs, a potential tie running base runner at second, but castillo grounds out to the pitcher to end the inning... but castiilo can not be dogged, he had future gifts to offer
top of the 5th- justin marks picks off another runner- unreal, yea it wen 1-3-6 but it was all started ny j mark...and believe me u- the entire oklahoma state brain trust came out to beg for a balk call
man this game had more twist and turns than me and nate in a sleeping bag
bottom of the 6th- THE WORM TURNS!!!!! with two ous and the card at bat manginni , the pokes 3b, makes a throwing error and burton advances to second base. isaha howes then misses a homer by ten feet....NO WORRIES SENIOR CASTILLO ONE OF THE CARDS MIAMI CARTELL CRUSHES A TWO OUT TWO RUN DUOBLE.......Louisville leads 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th!!!!!
top of 7 Marrks gets hit by a batted ball up the middle, but he is pulled do to pitch count...
kyle hollander come in to pitch, and the irony drips like rob gidells johnson in a strip joint. hollander transfered from oklahoma state.... any dumb bitch out there that fails to grasp the magic of sports after that nugget is just a dumb bitch..hollander survives, only after letting a rebel riddlinf shot miss a home run by 6 feet
bottom of the 7th---hard to dog rodrigiuez for trying to stretch a single into a double. after all the cards calling card has been being aggressive, but it was a pure stupid chice
bottom 8 logan walks and steals second, we are up 2-1 and this is the definition of a potential insurase run...but with 2 outs on a 3-0 count , isaha howes drives a ball to the warning track, it had homer written all ove it, but it was a line drive, it didn't reach over the fence, but i love the cards skipper giving the cards BEST hitter the green light at 3-0!!!!!!!!!
top ofthe 9th--- now dont get me wrong-- I LOVE TOM JURICH- HE IS GOD .. BUT HE MESSED UP....HE WLKED INTO THE RADIO booth and said we are only 3 outs away from thr biggest history u can comprehend.....tom u used to be on the baseball committee, u know baseball is all about superstitions , why the fuc$ did u say-hey dorky play by play man we are only 3 outs away from omaha....tom, we were ALL thinking the same thing-- but why did u say it???????
top 9 game tying homer by second tram all american, ty wright.....only 2 hits given up by cards hurlers, and they were both solo homers
we had a chance in the bottom of the tenth , but cates got robbed, booomer singled and logan just couldnt do it
top11 the pokes did not do jack,
bottom11- burton gets thrown out by a mile, trying to steal secind and then castillio hits a fake teaser home run to the track
top 12 dominguez makes a little league error which leads to a SIMON RBI---- 3-2 pokes
the rest is history.... we lose 3-2-- but do not forget the worst at bat in baseball history by cards pinch hiiter just mcllanahan-- i dont care hoe u spell his name, his at bat was a joke
we still had a chance in the bbottom of12 after the passed ball , but we did not get it done
WE WILL BEAT THE COWBOYS 12-4 N SUNDAY AND I WILL SEE U IN OMAHA
There are few things that bug me about cable tv. One of the biggest complaints I have with it came full circle today.
I have yet to find out the purpose of ESPNU. It is only available with digital cable and satellite packages. Most people who do not spend an arm and a leg for cable television do not get it. I want to know why the local cable company couldn't broadcast the game on a local channel to make sure everyone who couldnt be at the game had a chance to watch it.
When I realized I couldn't watch today's UL-OSU game because it was on this stupid channel, I was actually a little disappointed. I enjoyed watching the game yesterday and found myself wanting to watch more. I am a little shocked of what I just wrote because I am a diehard Cat fan. I will be like much a Louisville tomorrow and either at the game or glued to my tv watching every pitch. Thankfully, ESPN2 switched back and forth between a few games and the UL-OSU game was one of them.

Now on to another sports event of the day. Whether people know it or not, there was actually a Triple Crown horse race today too and it was a really fun race to watch. I am not a horse enthusiast but do enjoy watching some of the greatest athletes go head to head. Today was a rare race in that a filly tried to beat the boys, AND SHE DID. I did not bet on Rags To Riches but was very glad to see her win. I knew she was a great horse because of her pedigree and past performances and because of her trainer, Todd Pletcher, who won his first Triple Crown race today. I just wasnt sure she could beat Curlin or Hard Spun. They are two great race horses. Today she proved she may be the best three year old in the country. I would love to see her run against the boys again in the Breeder's Cup Classic later this fall.

I will not say GO CARDS, but, oh wait, I guess I kind of just did. CRAP. Anyways, GOOD LUCK TO THE CARDINAL 9. It would be great to see a team with so many local kids get a chance at greatness.
Derrick
Pictured below... Rosenblatt Stadium...where the College World Series is played. What a ballpark.

Man... these guys may regret the day they gave me the password to the blog zone to do recaps because now I want to give my toughts more often. Anyway, I've been held captive by UofL baseball this past week. I've always been a big fan of college baseball and college sports in general. UK baseball jump-started me last year and U of L has just increased my love. You don't understand how hard that is to admit when you've bled blue since you were born.
But what I have really found interesting is just how bandwagon the city of Louisville is. Wait... before you grab bats to beat the crap out of me, let me explain. In 2002, when Valley Sports took the city by storm (well at least South Louisville, but I'm pretty sure it was city-wide) I just attributed it to something that isn't that odd. Now, seeing first hand how EVERYONE has rallied about the Cardinal 9 (wow... how am I doing this? Well at least I've got my UK shirt on while I'm typing this) I've realized that sports fans in Louisville just work that way. We rally around our champions and ignore our losers unless it's basketball and even then to a degree! It's easy to see why the city of Louisville struggles to land pro teams. Owners see that we wont support a losing team and let's face it... not every owner of a pro team is really out to win alll the time ( Devil Rays, Kansas City, I'm looking at you).
Back to the Cards, I'm excited about what they are doing. Shutting down the 3rd best offense in the nation, check. Getting runs on the board no matter what, check. Playing with all the heart and soul in the world, check, check, check. It's hard to get a UK fan to actually be interested in anything red. But I think I'll be out there tomarrow morning to try and get a game 3 ticket! Now my thoughts on today's game... tough loss. Real tough. With NCAA inexperience, Dan McDonnell is really going to have to prepare these guys to not lose their excitement. Whoever turns out to be the UofL starter needs to start where the first two stopped and muffle the Cowboy offense. The way Okla St. rallied in Game 2, that might be easier said that done. Either way, you have to applaud these seniors for reaching unthinkable ground and to the fans who have came out and whooped and hollered.
Now if the Cardinal 9 do come out and come off the Pokes in what is going to be an amazing Game 3, I'm with The Freak... OMAHA OR BUST!!!
Man... that's a risky statement isn't it.

Count me among those that are continually shocked at why people don't appreciate or support College Baseball.
As EZ pointed out in his blog post, several points below, in a span of 15 minutes - which is generally the amount of time you sit in line waiting for a hot dog at a major league park - you saw two home runs, a SQUEEZE PLAY and an unbelievable home run robbing catch. All in a span of 15 minutes of arriving to the ballpark. Why don't the people of Kentucky, see this? What's so hard to like about this? I watched nine innings of errorless ball. I saw the Big East pitcher of the year mow down kid after kid. I saw a UL baseball coach that was doing all he could to muster and generate runs - which is a lost art in the pro game today. When was the last time you saw a major league baseball coach go the extra mile to generate runs by sacrifice bunting, stealing bases and/or a squeeze play? They are rare occurences if the batting order doesn't fall on the number nine hitter. Major League Baseball is great - don't get me wrong, but for a society that loves the long ball, why not dig college baseball. The other Southeastern states appreciate baseball enough to make a college baseball ticket as easy to find as a man with a full set of teeth.
Yesterday was fun and this tournament is such a crap-shoot, it's time college baseball catches the fever and in particular in Kentucky, where there is little good baseball even close. (Yes, I am calling out you Jerry Narron). We had not only a UL baseball win, but 3 come-from-behind victories in the Super Regionals and upsets galore.

I loved the atmosphere yesterday at Patterson Stadium and really enjoyed myself throughout the afternoon to say the least. I got a chance to meet my idol Paul Rogers, UL play-by-play man, and was star-struck through most of the afternoon. Regardless, it was a great time. I was amazed at how little the Oklahoma State baseball team tried to work the count and force pitcher Zach Pitts into making any key pitches late in at-bats. Pitts' pitch count was low and that's never a good thing for an opposing team, especially when that went through what - 6 different pitches? - yesterday. The Friday of super regional is as much about setting yourself up for the weekend as it is about winning the game. Oklahoma State looked like a bunch of amateurs in this regard. They pulled their starting pitcher early and now have a bunch of relievers pitching on one-day of rest. I understand this is a great bullpen for the Cowboys, but if they aren't rest, who cares? Louisville not only won on the scoreboard, they will win the fatigue factor.
This is why this is the hardest tournament in all of sports to win. You need luck. You need strategy. And you need to out-smart. Loved it

OK, one game down for the Cards in the Super Regional! So many unbelievable plays. I watched the first two innings from my media seat (which was actually in the crowd). Rob Gidel and I were sitting with our game writer Gavin. Rob pointed out that we had seen a lot in just the first two innings: a triple, a comebacker off of the oklahoma state pitcher's leg, two homers, and an outfielder rob a homer (if that's not number one on the SportsCenter Top Plays tonight, I'll be pissed, best catch I've ever seen live EASILY).
Then I went up to meet my dad and uncle and watch the game from one of the roofs. What a great view, and what an unbelievable atmosphere. One I won't soon forget. I wish I would've TIVO'd it. My friends were calling telling me it was awesome on TV.
Jim Patterson Stadium is awesome. The U of L athletic facilities as a whole are awesome. It's so picturesque. Whether you are a U of L fan or not, you should appreciate the facilities we have in our backyard. They are second to none.
So pumped for tomorrow. WILL SOMEONE MAKE A "I LOVE EZ, THE FREAK, AND BOBBY WAYNE" sign for the game. Give The Zone a little pub.
GO CARDS!

It's a Feel Good Friday... and everyone is feeling good about U of L baseball! EZ and Derrick are at Tailgaters today doing the show... so G and I are throwing a bomb party in studio since everyone left us.
EZ started off the show giving lots of love to the Cardinals and rallying everyone around the team. EZ then talked about Game 1 of the NBA finals last night, before randomly talking about old...slow drivers.
Back from a break... EZ went right back to Game 1 last night, asking if LeBron James' bad performance was a mistake or if the Spurs will shut him down all series. EZ said that he wants a physical game for the rest of the series and for LeBron to play well knowing that it will help the NBA.
Derrick and EZ then talked about Curt Schilling's almost no-hitter yesterday and asked if there is a worse way to win a game. Yeah, you win the game... but one more out and you just threw a no-hitter. Derrick and EZ tried to come up with a worst way, but just couldn't come up with one. Derrick and EZ then started about an article Derrick found about the unwritten rules of baseball. EZ then read off the rules from the article, before saying a lot of the rules just seemed like coaching philosophy.
Callers chimed in with their ideas or bittersweet wins citing personal events or major sporting events.
Hour 2 started with Mike Hutzel joining EZ at Tailgaters. They talked about Mike going on vacation soon to see a RedSox game. Then EZ threw out the topic of the day, what is another heartbreaking win. Mike and EZ then talked about Mike skipping the Superbowl before talking on Game 1 last night. EZ and Hutzel then talked about if the Spurs have a dynasty if they win this year. EZ said that 4 titles in 9 years isn't a dynasty, but wasn't rock solid in his decision. Mike then called Robert Horry a dynasty in himself, going for his 8th title.
Callers then got in for dynasty talks themselves, speaking of dynasties in all sports.
Back from the break, EZ got a very special phone call from Nasty Nate Muncy from Fort Knox. Nate said he's loss a little weigh and talked about all the running he's done. Nate, EZ and Mike went back and forth about the latest sports news. Nate had to go back to hunting down the "fake enemy" but we can't wait to get him back on Monday or Tuesday!
Back from the second break of the hour, EZ invited everyone out to Tailgaters to join the 1570 The Zone crew. EZ said the first 10 people who came in, brought at least 10 wings and named The Big EZ show would get a 1570 T-shirt and a Tailgaters t-shirt.
Mike and EZ then talked about the hardest championship to win. Mike brought up the College World Series, EZ talked about college football being the toughest championship but Mike said the toughest tournament is the Baseball College World Series. EZ put College FB first, then the NFL, NCAA Baseball and College Basketball as his list.
Hour 3 talked about the incoming rain and invited everyone to Tailgaters when the rain comes! Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com joined the show for his daily Churchill picks! Joey gave some of his picks on-air, but if you want all of Joey's knowledge...and it's pretty good stuff...check out TripleCrownSelections.com and you can have all of Joey's picks for FREE TODAY! Joey then gave some of his picks on tomorrow's Belmont card.
Brian Bennett, U of L beat writer for the Courier-Journal joined the show to talk about all the media hype and the mood around the U of L baseball team. Bennett said it felt like a college basketball setting and that the players are really enjoying it and are really loose. Bennett then talked about the atmosphere and the regional.
The last segment of the week is here and EZ is asking for a weather report from Scott Clark. Scott provided, saying the rain and wind has calmed, the sky is gray, but no rain? Carolina Steve then went down all the interesting Super Regionals before didn't into a little NASCAR talk.
It was a great week, if you're headed out to the game, grab a poncho... if not, check out Tailgaters! And check out more Big EZ Show next week from 10am-1pm on 1570 The Zone!

It's a Thirsty Thursday here on the Big EZ Show.
FORE!! EZ teed off recapping a friendly wager made between Dave Ragone and Scott Clark this morning. Clark bet Ragone he could break 100 on his next round of golf. If he does, Ragone has to wash Clark's car. If he doesn't, Clark must wash Ragone's car. EZ placed his bet on Clark not breaking 100 after seeing him play this week. GOOD LUCK SCOTT!!
EZ then launched a full court shot up about the Lebron James baby news. Lebron James was quoted in an interview saying he would miss the birth of his second child if it occurred on the day of a game. EZ agreed with Lebron and says it is okay because he has already seen it happen once and probably has a lot of money riding on the Finals.
Back from a break, callers went into labor about their ideas on whether or not LeBron should skip a game. After a few callers chimed in, a wonderful female caller Stephanie said that all children should be treated the same and you dont want a child that feels neglected. More callers broke their water and yelled and hollered about this whole birthing issue. Let's give everyone an epidural and just chill.
Hour 2 begins with a SUPER guest, UofL baseball coach Dan McDonnell to talk about his Cardinal 9 reaching and hosting a Super Regional series against Oklahoma State. McDonnell talked about the road trips, the excitement and preping the players for the Super Regionals. If you didn't get tickets, make sure you at least get out there, tailgate and support your Cardinals (come on now, I still bleed blue, they aren't my Cardinals).
For a good laugh, check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=3fTbJNu7l68 to see Big EZ in a blizzard eating contest at the Louisville Fire game on June 2.
EZ then brought up an article from the Tulsa World newspaper saying that UL was awarded the Super Regional to "grow college baseball in more places." Still reading from the article, EZ went on to say that Oklahoma State had a bigger stadium and was more prepared to host a super regional. EZ said he knows if the shoe was on the other foot he would be pretty pissed like Oklahoma State is.
Hour 3 started with a promise to play EZ money later in the hour. EZ got back to the Cardinals luck in grabbing the Super Regional and an article in the Tulsa World claiming that it was more of a charity give than a merit-based decision.
EZ then went to hockey, playing a clip from the Mighty Ducks movie. Congrats to the Anahiem Ducks for winning Lord Stanley's Cup...but no one cares. EZ told of how Middle Eastern TV station Al-Jeezra asking for a media credential, being denied and then talking of how desperate the NHL should be for ratings.
Back from a break Jerry Bonkowski, national NASCAR writer for Yahoo Sports joined the show to give a little engine-revving update. EZ got Jerry talking on this weekend and the passing of Bill France Jr before continuing on the ownership future of NASCAR. EZ wondered if it was time to give up on Junior making the Chase for the Cup. Jerry picked Kurt Busch for this weekend's race at Pocono.
The last segment of the day batted lead-off on Billy Donovan, who EZ is seemingly madly in love with. Let go and let Go-I mean Jeremy Foley. Joey Adams finally got on air, saying yesterday's make or break day....well... it broke. Joey promised a better result today and gave a few of his picks for today. If you want all of Joey's great picks.. go to TripleCrownSelections.com!
EZ played a quick game of EZ money before heading off the air.
Another packed and good show, tomorrow the Big EZ show heads to Tailgaters for a remote for U of L baseball, check us out tomorrow 10am-1pm for the Big EZ show!
Just as there wouldn't be the ubiquitous LeBron is a cross between Jordan and Magic comparisons without Magic and Jordan...well there probably wouldn't be The Office without Office Space and there would not be an an Office Space without this...so kick back tonight, enjoy getting into the NBA the only time it truly matters and give your dvr a night off...The Office is a re-run and LeBron is a live sporting event!

We are in the first hour of the Sports Mob
Right now Rob is talking about Brady and Lebron having babies out of wedlock. What's your opinion on superstar athletes making public this situation. As role models like it or not. Should athletes take more responsibility?
At least LBJ has kids with the same women. Tom Brady seems to just be spreading seed.
There is controversy in the LPGA. Oh No!!! Michelle Wie had a chance to shoot an 88 which would have given her a year ban. Withdrew from a tournament claiming an injury. Anika Sorenstam was not happy that Wie who withdrew from the tournament claiming a wrist injury was seen by Anika and others doing what? Hitting golf balls. Wow!! That wrist must have healed very quickly.
Is Wie the next Anna Kournikova? Pretty face, good athlete, but not the athlete that is going to win anyting important. She is really just a product of the hype machine that is ESPN.
To the PGA. Don't you love to see great golfers fall apart. Mickelson, Greg Norman, even when you see Tiger frustrated is great. That lets the viewer and weekend golfer know that "Damn golf is really, really hard."
Intern Brian wants Wie to disappear. I will have to agree with him.
Tom Jurich won AD of the year but don't pretend the Mitch Barndhart hasnt done a good job. The guys seem to be feeding off of each other. I love to see it. They are trying to top each other which is really good for both schools. The facilities these schools have now because of these two men are incredible. Don't believe me. Go to Papa Johns stadium, or check out JIm Patterson stadium. Those are fantastic facilities.
Im a UK fan but I am rooting for the Cards this weekend. As should everyone in this area should. Why wouldn't you? This gives something for Cats to shoot for. Now UK baseball has to step and make this rivalry even better.
Quick break be right back.
Trent Green goes the Dolphins. I am pretty on the fence with that move. I am a die hard fins fan. The move I am excited about is that they are going to trade Culepepper. I thought that was a terrible move when Douche Saban took him. I am ready for the John Beck era. I do think Trent Green can help the learning curve.
So where does Daunte go? He doesnt want to be a backup but he might have to be. The Falcons could be an interesting spot considering the Mike Vick situation. Texans could probably check him out. If the Packers arent sold on Aaron Rogers then he could go slide in the Brett Favre spot when he dies.
A caller just told us that he had Trent Green was his backup on his fantasy team. He doesnt feel Green should be a starter. I dont know if that logic really translates. Oh, well I guess everyone has their own system.
The talk now is if Chris Chambers is a number one receiver. Again I'm a fins fan, I love Chambers, but I am realistic. Chambers is no better than a 2 and maybe just a really, really good 3.
Did you hear Gary Sheffields comments? This dude is insane. He said that there are more Latin players in baseball than black players because they are easier to control. Why isnt this a bigger story than the Don Imus issue. Easier to control? Isnt that an under handed way of comparing the situation to slavery? I feel if a white player made this statement we would be talking about this in the media all day long. Just another episode of double standard theatre.
Quinn Snyder in the D-League? I guess he did cheat at Mizzou. No other college wanted to touch him. I guess Coach K didnt teach ol' Quinny how to keep everything swept under the rug.
another break, back soon.
Michael McCammon from inside the ville is on the line. He is not suprised that the tickets sold out so quickly for the super regional. Everyone grows up playing little league. There is always that love for the game. It is so much easier to root for a team when they are winning. Band wagon or not teams love to see a crowd. Mike feels Jurich should have won AD of the year before. The question is what took so long for people to notice? Is Louisville football going to add any new recruits? With the high school football camps coming up, there are a lot of kids who are trying to stand out and make a name for themselves.
Well I have to head out. I'll keep blogging, you keep reading.
Well, it looks as though Osama Bin Laden or anyone over in that neck of the woods will not be attending this year's Stanley Cup Finals.
If it's me, with all due respect to the NHL, no one is at these games anyway! I'd let Osama be the freaking goalie if he wanted to be. At least there'd be some interest.
Also fitting into this "you can't make this stuff up" blog post today... Pardon me if I'm not really interested in the "hottest" sports blogger poll on the internet (although I will provide a link to vote for one Matt Jones, who is a contestant--some pub for his site and his radio show).
Folks, there are two different things we can do in the sports world to voice our opinion, and NOT EVER BE SEEN. One is blogging about sports, and the other is getting into sports radio (both of which we ALL basically do here at The Zone). Otherwise, we'd be in television! So I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the "hottest" blogger award will probably go to someone that was never voted "best looking" in their graduating high school class. What's funny is even most of the bloggers in the contest (most of which nominated themselves) will attest to the fact that they are nowhere near hot.
I should know... I'm in radio... and a little jealous. Why can't they have a "hottest" sports radio host contest? I'd nominate myself!
As we close, you thought brawls only occured in sports nowadays? You'd be sorely mistaken. This kind of stuff happened back in the day as well (as seen in the YouTube video below). And what's really interesting about it--the announcer basically cues up the band. I guess the band would try to play the National Anthem or the school's fight song to make any brawl stop. If you saw a fight like this today, which included players AND fans (like this one did), the game would be immediately stopped (this one got back to play just minutes later it seems), players would be suspended all over the place (I doubt these refs even made an ejection), and charges would probably be filed (instead, the announcers are takling about how a couple of "shiners" will obviously be incurred). Very interesting video indeed.

It's Hump Day on the Big EZ Show...but keep it in your pants for now.
The first segment of the show focused on EZ's impressions, a caller who just couldn't have his first child born in Lexington. Jumping around on whacky fans and schedule marriages on college football saturdays finished the opening round of the Big EZ Show.
Back from the first break, EZ brought up Danica Patrick's shove of Dan Wheldon after the past weekend's IRL race. Saying Danica was out of the line for doing that, EZ threw it out to callers to see what they thought. Upset that IRL did nothing, EZ claimed a really unfair double standard.
EZ then brought up a list from AskMen.com about the 10 most cursed bloodlines. The Kennedy's came in at number 1, to no surprise. There comes a point in time where you have to ask if God hates you... and I think the Kennedy's are at that point.
EZ then quickly touched on how Tiger recieve 10x his salary in endorsements, which is pretty crazy.
Hour 2 started on the hardcourt with EZ reading comments from Jodie Meeks in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Speaking on a possible four guard lineup and other changes this upcoming season, Meeks showed maturity in offering to do whatever it takes to win. EZ loved Meeks attitude and said that the top teams have the team players that help they rise above.
Callers brought up a range of topics, including U of L baseball, some college basketball and all kinds of topics.
Back from a break, EZ let the listeners know that all reserved seats for this weekend's Super Regional at UL are sold out with standing room and outfield berm seats left. Sunday tickets will go on sale right after the Saturday game if needed.
Back from the second break of the hour, EZ went to predicting the win totals for our three local basketball programs. EZ said that the Cards will win 27 games and finish in the Elite 8. IU will win 25 games and lose in the Sweet 16 and Uk will win 24 games and lose in the Sweet Sixteen. EZ then said IU will beat UK in Bloomington by 4 points. EZ said UK will go a 22-10 regular season, runner-up in the SEC tourney, be a 5/6 seed and lose to a No.1 seed in the round of 16.
Hour 3 started with EZ making a friendly bet with a caller about how U of L will finish their regular season in basketball, check back for exact details.
Joey Adams from TripleCrownSelections.com joined the show his daily horse racing chatter. Joey told EZ about the post positions drawn this morning for the Belmont. With a 7 horse field, Joey went over odds for all the horses before breaking everything down. Joey then moved to the Churchill card for today, giving some of his picks. If you want some of Joey's success, check out TripleCrownSelections.com and get all of Joey's plays for only 5 bucks!
Back from break, EZ briefly touched on the RPI's of Oklahoma State and Louisville in baseball. 53 and 44 respectively, Cinderella is crashing Omaha in one way or another. Up next, EZ talked about Pat Forde's latest column in which Pat talks about the Boise State-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl being the best game ever. EZ went to the phone lines to get listeners opinions on the best game ever watched and best game they ever attended. The opinions ranged from local high school sports to college events.
Well the Big EZ show is over the hump, hopefully you get through the rest of your hump day. Check back tomorrow from 10am-1pm for more Big EZ show. Check out the podcast at www.bigezpod.blogspot.com!

[ FREAK, WILL YOU MARRY ME?]
Big props to kenny coston for a great job on the mid day melee today..........lets take a look at the two missing members of the melee. Nate Muncey is working on a tank in 90 degree heat at a Marine base in fort knox, and cute ass katherine is in a bikini soaking up the sun on the beach in south carolina. i wonder if either one of them know about billy donavan or the cards hosting a super regional........... well i cant be there this weekend, but i just read where all 3 games will be on espn or espn 2, and that makes me happy. yea big ez, i am a band wagon jumper.... first pitch of game one will be going on during the mid day melle. it will be hard to talk and watch the game at the same time. i think i will consume a mid day melee super regional 12 pack during the show.... i just got back fro running two miles, i am a bad ass. my gift to louisville continues, it is the cinderella story that is cardinal baseball. my gift will be opened in omaha. it is freak power baby. do u have any gifts for me?.....i started reading a new book last night. it was a gift from my brother, old school steve shively. it is called - the punch--, id let kentucky fans borrow it , but there are no pictures.....it is exactly 4:00pm here in houston, but it is definitly not 4:20 here in my crib. i DESPERATELY wish it was. it just makes music and tv SOOOOOOOO much better....i cant wath mens tennis, but i am really hoping for a nadal federer final, i will watch that. i love womens tennis, but every time i turn on the french open, i cant tell if it is live or not, and then i see the final results on the web while the match is going on. i want to french open the hottie above. anna k is the hottest girl ever!!!!!! i wonder what paris is doing RIGHT NOW. i have been in jail alot, so i am pretty sure she is eating a bologna sandwhich or getting her ass kicked....... We decided we'd give our "diehard zoners" a little 'inside' look at The Big EZ Show.
It's nothing really interesting. In fact, it kind of sucks a little. But we all know there is that fragment of the listener base that is obsessed with EZ, and for those of you who obviously have no life... enjoy his opening Monday rant ON VIDEO.
Now, please... don't just go to the next webpage without reading me out here.
First off, there is one HUGE reason why you should think that Pitino IS a candidate for the NBA. And it's the only reason you need to know: BECAUSE HE'S TELLING US HE'S NOT A CANDIDATE.
Rick is one of the best coaches to have ever coached the game. I truly believe that. So why wouldn't an NBA team call on him when a job is open? I am truly praying that he remains the head coach at the University of Louisville. I think he belongs here and I think he's got this program heading to heights we haven't seen since the 80's.
But, if you know Rick, you know that it would be wrong of us to take every word he said and believed it as if it were the holy word.
And there's at least one writer in Orlando that thinks Ricky P may still be the way to go.
Now, obviously, the chances are the Cardinal coach won't go anywhere. But, lets just say I'm keeping my eyes open. I'm not getting fooled again!
STAY RICKY P!

Check out the article below on the college baseball world series. It is from a couple of years ago on espn.com. All i can say is i am pulling hard for the CARDS. they are up 12-5 now on Missouri, but you never know. Great job by Derrick Johnson on the Mid Day Melle today. Kenny Colston, the blog zone legend is on deck. I hate the Gators and Billy D , i hope this scars them both for life......... Paris is in jail, we all have a dark side, and those thoughts are passing through our collective brains right now. If she was ever going to make anothe sex tape, this is the time....the MTV movie awards were horrible last night. Not funny, not hip, not edgy, way to crude, and a bunch of crappy movies. I still want to nibble on Sara Silverman however. I can't believe she got away with some of the stuff she did in the post Imus atmosphere. Her ripping on Paris was priceless though....... i watched the Democrats debate last night. They don't give that old cook from Alaska any air time. He is a hoot. if i had to pick a winner last night it would be joe biden...My sports weekend was eclectic. I really loved the Sharapova - Schneyder match in Paris. Nobody could put it away, it was good drama, and the dude that yelled from the crowd is a butt munch....it was fun to see the pistons meltdown on saturday night. Screw rasheed Wallace and Chris Webber. They do not deserve to play the game Both poster children for what is wrong with sports. Flip Saunders will be fired i believe. He has a wierd face. If you were to smush together john callapari's face with rudy tomjohnavichs' face, you would get- flip saunders face. I hate callapari- he is a slimy pimp. I love rudy t, he is old school cool.....Your boy k.j.Choi won jacks tourney. i am happy for him, he has been hacking away for a long time. Jim Nantz makes me sick!!!!! he has to stop making love to golf with his voice on the air. his obsession with golf, and his rich boy voice and ass kissing ways are way over the line...... christy kerr new hot chick i saw on the lpga tour this weekend. I love golf playoffs, i dont know if there is any better drama in sports. Looks like Ochoa is quite the choker......why do the nba playoffs not start until thursday, that is so stupid. i just hope the series gets to 2-2........satan, i mean espn, still shoves the yankees- red sox down are throat with the yankees 13.5 out. it is like they sold there soul to the devil and have to over expose those two teams in order to stay on the air, their special on sports talk radio sucked. They always show a bunch of meet heads from the same cities over and over. all these fat, my way or the highway talk show hosts. They showed this one joke, ex oriole jim traber from oklahoma city. i listened to his show while traveling one day, and i wanted to kill myself.......i watched two of the worst movies i have ever seen this weekend, WOLF with Jack Nickleson, and mission impossible 2,,,both were pure trash,,,,by the way what was Jack on last night on mtv? couldnt understand a word he said.....IT IS 16-6 CARDS IN THE 8TH!!!!!!!!! GO LOUISVILLE!!!!!!! ONE STEP CLOSER--- WE HAVE TO RENT A PARTY BUS AND ROAD TRIP TO OMAHA IF THEY MAKE IT. RYAN, MAYO, OTTING-- LETS GO PARTY IN OMAHA----BEAT OKLAHOMA STATE!!!!!!

OMAHA, Neb. -- The game was scheduled to start in 20 minutes, but Jeff Richardson and his three buddies from South Dakota had yet to find an affordable parking spot. As they drove down 13th Street, sign after sign advertised available spots for a pricey $20.
Reluctantly, Richardson drove his blue Ford Probe into one of the private lots, a converted front yard, and moaned about the steep fee. "Tell you what," the unshaven attendant in a sleeveless orange shirt said. "You parkin' for both games?"
"Yeah," Richardson said.
"Come back in between and I'll getcha a couple of cold beers."
"Yeah?" Richardson asked, "I can handle that."
Welcome to the College World Series, a place where big time baseball blends with Heartland Hospitality to form one of our country's more unique sporting events.
Nowhere else will a parking attendant toss in a couple brewskies to convince you to park in his lot. Nowhere else is pregame traffic often greeted with a smile and a wave. And nowhere else do fans shuffling in and out of Rosenblatt Stadium consistently apologize when bumping into one another.
"It's Middle America at its best," Richardson said. That's why we come down here. Nobody takes themselves too seriously -- we're all just here to watch some baseball and have a good time."
Since 1950, the College World Series has called Omaha's Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium home. It's the only major collegiate championship that is played in the same venue, year in and year out.
What Pasadena is to the Rose Bowl, what Indianapolis is to the Indy 500, what Louisville is to the Kentucky Derby, Omaha is to the College World Series.
"They could never, they should never play this Series anywhere else," Cal State Fullerton athletics director Brian Quinn said. "If the NCAA ever moved this out of Omaha, they'd be nuts.
"This atmosphere, this community, you couldn't duplicate this anywhere. And it's authentic. People don't realize -- Omaha is college baseball."
This is no Super Bowl. No Final Four. No Rose Bowl. It's an event entirely unique to itself. Where else would nearly 250,000 fans spend 12 days cheering for eight teams they barely knew anything about a week earlier?
At a time when corporate America continues to squeeze its way into amateur athletics, the College World Series is a throwback. Sure, somebody from Shell wants you to sign up for a gas credit card here and Nike is putting on a hitting demonstration there, but there aren't many stuffy VIPs or their stuffier pregame tents.
Instead, the scene outside Rosenblatt is like a five-block frat party. Hooters girls pass out coupons for free wings. A sports apparel shop boasts a sign, "We reserve the right to bend your cap if you look like a dork." Steak sandwiches are grilled on one corner, free bottles of water with the label, "How to have a relationsip with God through Jesus Christ" are passed out on another.
And just down the road, Wahoo (Neb.) English teacher Larry Fangman sits at a card table and peddles "The Cupid Killer," his murder-mystery novel written with the College World Series as its backdrop.
It's as if the final Sunday at the County Fair meets with a Friday night after hours at Delta Chi Omega.
"It's two weeks of a carnival-like atmosphere," said Jack Diesing, president of CWS Inc., the local organizing committee. "Basically, it's just a place to hang out and have fun."

— Cal State Fullerton athletics director Brian Quinn |
This year, athletics department officials from Cal State Fullerton rented a house on 13th Street, the main access road to Rosenblatt Stadium. They covered the house in orange and blue, draped a giant Fullerton flag across the front and partied.
"It's a great way for every Fullerton fan or just baseball fan to meet and have a good time," Quinn said. "And it's proven to be a great fund-raiser."
Even the cops are laid-back, with one group of Omaha's finest chilling under a tent prior to Thursday night's game, electronically controlling the traffic lights at 13th and Bob Gibson Boulevard while lounging in a director's chair.
Diesing and his committee estimate the World Series pumps roughly $30 million into the local economy. They're doing another such evaluation after this year's series and believe this time, the number will be closer to $40 million.
Locals plan their weddings around this. And then they send out invitations with pictures of Rosenblatt Stadium on the front.
Through Thursday night's ninth session, 199,949 fans, an average of 22,217 per session had walked through Rosenblatt's turnstiles. With a best-of-three series set for Saturday, Sunday and, if necessary, Monday, the Series will likely shatter last year's total attendance of 223, 762. Rosenblatt Stadium holds just under 24,000 fans.
"What this has turned into is beyond even my wildest dreams," said former USC coach Rod Dedeaux, who won more College World Series games (60) and championships (10) than anyone else. "For eleven months out of the year, most of these people could care less about college baseball. And then it comes time for Omaha."
Part of that is the tradition. The College World Series has been played in Omaha for all but three years of its existence. It spent two years in Kalamazoo, Mich. and one in Wichita, Kan.
It's just as big of a deal for the players as it is the fans. After all, the average college baseball game is attended by a few thousand fans. For most of these players, who will never make the major leagues, playing in front of 24,000 is a dream come true.
The city's name is so synonymous with the College World Series that a major aluminum bat maker has an "Omaha" line.
"When you put together your scheduled for the season, you put down Omaha. It's Omaha," Dedeaux said. "That's what you talk to your kids about -- that's what you're trying to do -- get to Omaha."
The local newspaper, the Omaha World-Herald, puts out a special World Series section on each of the series' 12 days. Downtown offices and hotels boast massive, "Welcome baseball fans signs." Every bar has some sort of World Series special, depending on who wins. And sit down for dinner in a downtown restaurant, reveal that you're in town for the Series, and you're instantly treated like some sort of diplomat.
Even the bus drivers, cab drivers, doormen and meter maids get into the act.
"Name three college championships that you know where they are," Diesing said. "Maybe you know which bowl the BCS championship is at that year. And maybe you know where the Final Four is going to be held. After that, inevitably, you're going to so Omaha. And this city takes a lot of pride in that.
"It's so hard to explain to people -- it's just different here. Omaha embodies the best parts of our country -- we've got big city stuff with a small town feel. And people like that." |
While I'm thinking about it...
(1) Doesn't the whole Billy Donovan thing just make you laugh? Donovan deciding to reneg on his contract with the Magic. What the hell? Did you not think it through before? And what happened with him this weekend? What changed? I'm very pumped for the next Donovan presser. What will he say?
(2) The Sports Mob has Billi Gillispie today. That should be interesting. My top question for Billy: Do we really have to call you Billy Clyde? Or can we all be grown up and not sound like we're from Hicktown, USA and just call you Coach Gillispie?
(3) We're starting to put a whole lot more video on here. And in the spirit of that, how about on of the coolest experiences of my life... the Colts winning the Super Bowl! I was at the Hooters in Downtown Indy watching it with tons of crazy Colts fans! Here was the scene as time ran out on the victory!

Welcome to the Monday edition of the Big EZ show a jampacked Monday show.
Last nights Red Sox game. Sox fans chanting where is Roger? apparently Mr. Clemens has a fatigued groin. Whatever that is. How do you speculate a fatigued groin? Keep spending that money yankees.
Billy Donovan wants back in gatorland. this move is really kind of making him look like a tool. If UK fans were upset with him dissing Kentucky to go to the NBA. Now UK fans are angry because they will probably have to deal with him back in the SEC. it's only a littile suprising to see this move from Donovan. Most coaches go back and forth about the NBA, after winning a national champioinship, directly after winning, not so much after signing the contract.
Had to think of Rick Pitino when this happened. The "let's make this abouit me attitude." It took Pitino a few years to realize he needed to go back to college. Donovan I guess only needed a few days. So, what do you do if your a Florida fan? You take him back of course. You have to he just won back to back championships, and brought more good recruits. Hopefully, cats fans this will be the last talk about Jai Lucas.
Now, the big question to Donovan from all recruits will be of course from now on "Will you be here?" Now he can give an honest answer. He turned down UK one of the most prestigous college jobs in the country and the NBA. I'm pretty sure he is set where he is.
Is this the biggest coaching flip flop ever? Bill Belicheck comes to mind when he went from the Jets to the Pats.
Can Billy become a face on the Mount Rushmore of college basketball now? There is of course going to be those against the thought. Most probably from angry UK fan. "He didnt even make the final four in his first so and so years!!" " When he made it in 2000 he nedded a last second shot to make it out of the first round."
Time for the second segment
Billy going back to Florida, well it's not official yet, but we will keep everyone posted.
It's good to see A-Rod step up and make something happen when the media is trashing him. Maybe he deserves some of it, but whatever. He hit the eventual game winning home run in the 9th againy the BoSox last night.
The Cavs are in the finals. Congrats to LeBron. The Spurs will still probably win. If the Cavs win, is the route they took to do it, the best ever? They would had to beat the best two teams of the last 10 years back to back.
Back to phone calls
Find me a bigger flip flop than Billy Donovan. So far we have Dana Altman and Bobby Cremins. These guys just aren't cutting it.
How good is the Louisville-West Virginia rivalry.
We have Fred Cowgill coming in very soon. He stops by from time to time as will Rick Bozich. We also have Charles Robinson the NFL writer for yahoo sports. Gotta ask him about Mike Vick.
The Reds are a shame. They just never seem like they are going to pull things together. As much as some people can't stand the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, you have to admit it is good baseball. A pop fly goes up to A-Rod and the entire Boston crowd screaming "mine." Hate these teams or not it is still good baseball to watch. It should be with all the money these teams spend, they usually have the best players.
Coming up more lists. I love lists. Everyone loves lists. This is one I think guys will like, well not just guys this one I think ladies will appreciate.
We are into the 3rd segment
How much pull does Billy have now? I think it has to be a lot. "Of course I will be here. Did you see the jobs I turned down? I love the University of Florida." I imagine he is going to have to pay a nice fine by backing out of the Orlando deal. Im sure he wont be hurting for cash though.
Now to the list. 10 traits men look for in a girlfriend. Most of these are lame. Number 1- she has a life of her own. That one is ok, but you don't want her to ignore your life. I would have to say I'm on the fence. 2- she never makes the first move? What? 3- She is sexy without being trampy. Thats a good one. 4-Waits to have sex. Boooo. 5-Does little things to show she cares. Everyone should do that. 6-She should be her boyfriends best wingman. I guess, I dont really get that one. 7-She never turns on the pressure. I totally agree. 8-She doesnt take crap from anybody. The could be a double edged sword. She will probably have to take crap from me. 9- A good woman always chooses a good man. Crap most women under 30 never do that. 10-honest. Of course that makes since. So who made this list. A womens website. Are you kidding me? Look at number 2. A guy cant always make the first move. At work it would be considered harrasment. Number 4-Waits to have sex?"Hey guys meet my lady. she is really special. She wont have sex with me and I love her for it." ivillage.com is the website check it out if you want.
We are now entering the second hour of the show.
Emails are great. I like reading the emails from the people who listen because they sound intelligent. You get to edit and say what you want. Love the calllers too but sometimes nerves can get the best of them and they struggle.
Did anyone see ESPN page 2's Ultimate Commencement speech. This thing is made up of entirley sports movie quotes. It's one of the most unique things to read. You should check it out when you get a chance.
LA Times and the Cicago Tribune got a one on one with Michael Jordan. He feels that LeBron is growing as a player and wants him to remain consistent. Jordan feels that he is showing signs that he can take the leap into super stardom. Now. about Kobe, he says frustration is part of the game. Jordan thinks he is making more of a problem than there is. He has a good coach and a good GM. Jordan feels if Kobe sits back and reflects. He will be ok. Now, on Scottie Pippen saying that more teams want a Pippen not a Jordan. Jordan says in a way he is right. You need role players who are tremendous players that can accept a role and do the best he can. Someone who isnt quite as gifted as a Michael Jordan, but is really, really close.
Fred Cowgill when we return.
Billy Donovan is the talk of the day. 72 hours thats all it took for him to change his mind. Why couldnt he figure this out before he signed the contract. Makes him look like such a tool.
Back to the list. Top ten things a guy looks for in a girl. It pretty much seems like something to keep girls in good manners. If you want a better list look for something in Maxim or FHM.
Lets talk about double standards for a moment. Going the way of Indy Racing. Danica Patrick goes up to Dan Wheldon gives him a piece of her mind and then kind of shoves him. She was upset about something that happened on the track. So does Danica get to just get angry and make physical contact with the other male drivers? It wasnt a big shove, and she didn't really shove hard, but what if it were the other way around? Would Dan Wheldon be ridiculed for even touching Danica in an angry way? The IRL must come out and say something, they haven't yet. No fines, mo penalty. If they don't, then look back at this as something people will agure about as a double standard.
More lists. You ready? I'm ready. Lists are easy to ready and fun to argue. You can always tweek the list to what you think works best.
Top 10 athletes without a championship. 10-Sir Charles,9-Warren Moon, 8-Barry Sanders,7-CArl Yastrimski,6-Eric Dickerson,5-Elgin Baylor,4-Ted Williams,3-Some hockey player, 2-Karl Malone, 1-Dan Marino. Can't really argure Marino. I really think they just threw an NHL player just to have one. Barry Sanders seems a little low on this list. I probably wouldnt even have Moon on the list. What about Barry Bonds.
A pastor just called in to let us know that to keep the mens attention at church he throws lists into his teachings.
We are entering the last segment of hour number 2.
It's COWGILL TIME!! Fran Tarkenton is Freddie's choice of best athlete not to win a championship that was held off the list.
More Donovan talk. If nothing else these guy will remain in the news for awhile. As is said, all publicity is good publicity. One of the biggest issues of Billy coming back could be his wife didnt want to really locate. Even if he is only a hundred miles away from his wife and he has to sleep in a condo 3 or 4 times a week. It really just wasnt worth it. Sometimes family is just more important. Maybe it took a few days to realize the impact of not being able to see his family as a much as he wants.
Racing news. Cowgill likes Curlin. Curlin is an amazing horse. He is a physical specimen he compares to the other horses like Tiger Woods compares to other golfers. Fred has to go but we will be in touch with him more throughout the week.
It's time for the most important hour in radio. Hour number 3.
askmen.com had the best athlete not to win a championship list, of course it is debateable. Zach feels that Sir Charles shouild be number 2 on that list. Bonds who was not on the askmen.com list Zach puts at 4. Does Mark Martin make this list? Maybe, really just depends on if you are a race fan or not. How about Mr. Cub? Ernie Banks never won.
Don't forget to watch the Belmont this weekend. Curlin is probably going to win and Street Sense isnt running. Street Sense's breeding rights have already been sold. As have the breeding rights to Hard Spun. So these horses will probably running for about 5 more months and then that's it. The horses will go to stud. So if you want to go see these horses perform you will have to do it soon. The stud farms will not take a chance on the horses getting hurt in a race. Barbaro's death may have made an impact on the quick sell of these tremendous horses. The owner of Barbaro lost millions of potential dollars because Barbaro could not become a succesfull sire.
Charles Robinson national football league writer is up next.
NASCAR UPDATE!!!!!!!
Everyone is turning left.
Now with Charles Robinson. Right now he is vacationing in Vegas, but he did call in to talk with us. Vick is still expected to start with Harrington and Shockley battling for the backup job. Maybe hindsight would have kept Schaub. They did get good value for him and there is no garauntee that he would have suceeded in Petrino's system.
What palyer in the NFL would you start your franchise with? I would have to go quarterback. The leader of the team and tends to have longer careers health wise then a running back. If you go defense. Do you go with Shawn Merriman? If you were to chose today. I would probably go Carson Palmer. He is on the up and much younger than Peyton. He isnt better than Manning but is much younger.
Zach ask Charles who will be in the top 2 or 3 for NFL rookie of the year. The question you have to ask is, who is going to get playing tme? Calvin Johnson obviously. He probably has the best chance to make a big impact. Charles is heading back to his vacation. We will talk to him again very soon.
Hopefully we will have Rick Bozich when we get back.
Welcome to the last segment of the show.
Back to the best athletes without a championship. Bruce Smith was another guy not on the list. Good email, but I think Jim Kelly or Thurman Thomas is a better choice. Tony Gwynn is also a good name. Reggie Miller, Patrick Ewing. Marino has to be the unanimous number 1 choice. Ken Griffey Jr. is another name that could go on the list. I assume the list was made with those playsers that have already stopped playing. There are tons of players that haven't won yet.
Bozich on the line. The first name to come to his mind was Barkley. Rick thinks Billly should have never Florida in the first place. Billy is building someting special at Florida. What does Bozich think about LBJ? The game 5 performance is in the discussion of best playoff moment but easily not the best. For todays game it sets him apart from Kobe and D-Wade, because he took a team on his shoulders and took them to the finals. If nothing else at least LBJ made the NBA interesting again. Bozich out. We're out. Talk to ya tomorrow.

With all the hoopla surrounding Billy Donovan's indecision, I only thought it fitting we'd throw up a picture of John Kerry.
"I voted for it, before I voted against it."
"I decided to go to The Orlando Magic before I decided against It"

Hi there. It is me, John Renshaw. I have been a bad blog boy, but i am back on the horse. This will be short and sweet, but i wanted to say how proud i was of Brian Hash, Steve'' ice box '' hume, and Cute Ass Katherine, and 1570 the zone. The three interns mentioned above co hosted the mid day melee this week and did a mind blowingly fantastic job. It was the first time for all of them hosting a live radio show, but i coudn't tell!!!! None of them sounded nervous, they all had valid points and opinions, they never ran out of gas, and they had great radio presence. They even havd the patience to put up with me. GREAT JOB GUYS!! I AM A PROUD PAPA!!! Famous nathan muncey, serving at fort knox is very proud of u guys too. Of course, the big ez and rob gidell filled in as well. I would rather not comment on their performances...ha ha- just kidding
Soooo happy the cards beat the canes- i said all along that game 1 was the cards best chance for a win. But i never thought the big east pitcher of the year would be knocked out in the bottom of the second, and that the cards would score ten unanswered runs to win. BEAT MISSOURI TONIGHT!!!
i say that jai lucas ends up at Kentucky...... i am so glad florida fans are in misery, i HATE the gators, always have and always will

The Throwdown is back! In Nasty Nate's leave of absence Katherine has stepped in to host this Friday edition of the Mid Day Melee!
The first punch was thrown at Billy Donovan for leaving UF for the Orlando Magic. Katherine thought it was a bad decision while her and The Freak went back and forth on the implications from Donovan leaving. Johnny mentioned that some of the other NBA teams had contacted Donovan but were turned down. Johnny and Katherine tabbed Anthony Grant, who just led VCU to the NCAA tourney, as the next UF coach.
Johnny and Katherine then discussed some other possibly candidates for the UF job and if Grant is a big-enough name for Jeremy Foley and the Gator fan-base. Johnny then said that everyone will know whether or not Grant will be the next coach within 24 hours.
Back from a quick breather, a caller wanted to put up his dukes and take on the Donovan debate with Johnny and Katherine. Discussing if Donovan will flop in the NBA, what Donovan wants as a coach and more about Orlando's new coach. More callers jumped into the fray saying NBA coaches are more like managers.
Johnny and Katherine then got onto the big topic of the day, LeBron James carrying Cleveland to their Game 5 win. Johnny said it was a game he won't ever forget and it could be James' turning point into the superstardom that LeBron has been hyped on. Callers debated with Johnny on NBA and how good the NBA actually was.
Right before the end of the Hour 1, Katherine and Johnny got into a movie discussion about action movies, action stars and Harry Potter. Katherine admitted to pre-ordering Harry Potter movie tickets, reading all the books and the whole 10 yards.
Back for Hour 2, Johnny and Katherine wanted to turn to the phone lines to see what the listeners thought about the day's sports news.
Running out to the diamond, Johnny and Katherine got onto U of L's baseball team taking the field today against Miami in Columbia, MO. for the NCAA regionals. Johnny spoke of how baseball is in Tallahassee, where Florida State University is. Johnny said that U of L has a good chance to win today, but wasn't sure about the rest of the regional.
Topics bounced around to baseball, Katherine and Johnny took some callers and it was a great way to end the Melee this week! Check back from 1-3 pm next week to see who co-hosts with The Freak next!
By Kenny Colston
It's a Feel-Good Friday and what a quick week it has been. But enough of that, let's get onto the show.
Starting for the show was Game 5 of Pistons/Cavs in which EZ said that it was the best game he has seen in June in a loooooong time. It was a must-see for EZ. Callers agreed and disagreed with EZ, but the host was just determined that it was something you had to see and on-par with all the great playoff performances.
King James took up the majority of first hour with the Game 5 conversation carrying the show on it's back just like LeBron did for Cleveland. But EZ did briefly talk about being around Kelvin Sampson over at Huber's last night.
Hour 2 started with more talk of Kelvin Sampson and EZ last night. EZ said he wasn't "That Guy" when at a press conferences or meetings by drawing attention to himself, just laying back. EZ then said that Rick Pitino has competition for his mancrush, with Kelvin Sampson gaining massive ground.
Callers then chimed in and got EZ on his soapbox about media-savvy coaches and how not being media-savvy just make medicore season worst. Other callers got EZ back on the Eastern Conference Finals and LeBron's performance. Trading poiints with callers, EZ debated the greatest of the performance and of Game 5 itself.
Back from a break... LeBron James picked the show right back onto his shoulders. Going into double OT, callers and EZ kept trading buckets about everything involving the NBA and King James.
Staying on the hardcourt, EZ picked up the Billy Donovan issue by impersonating UK fan who has been saying that Eddie Muns- I mean Billy Donovan isn't that good, is going to fail, etc. etc. EZ went on to say that UK fans should be elated to have Gillispie AND have Donovan bolt UF. EZ went on to say that Donovan was the guy that has knocked UK off the top and with Billy The Kid gone, UK has rise a lot quicker.
Coming back off the bench, EZ went back to Billy D and about how people are saying Donovan made a dumb decision when UF could have been the next CBB Dynasty.
Hour 3... and it was back and forth between Billy Donovan and LeBron James. But Joey Adams took the discussion off the hardcourt and onto the track. Joey talked about his monster day yesterday if you want to have monster days like Joey, check out his website, TripleCrownSelections.com where you can get all of Joey's pick for only 5 bucks. After giving out some of his picks for today, Joey talked about the 3 big stakes races tomorrow at Churchill. Belmont talk took post position 3 for today's conversation. Check out Today @ The Races tomorrow from 9-10 am with Joey Adams here on 1570 The Zone AM!
Bob Domine joined the show to give his take on the sports news of the day. Domine said UK should be glad Billy D didn't come to UK and then leave for the pros. Domine brought up that Jai Lucas has a big decision to make on whether to stay or not. How to pronounce names came up next... from out in left field. Domine and EZ just took the conversation all of the place with the topics from today's show.
The last segment of the week came up next with EZ bouncing around the idea of what Jai Lucas is going to do. Callers rang in for their last chance to talk with EZ before the weekend. Discussing LeBron and other NBA playoff great games and more on Billy G/Billy D. You know it's Local Louisville Radio when we end on college basketball in JUNE! Check out Hour 1 podcast at http://www.bigezpod.blogspot.com/ and check back in Monday, 10am-1pm for more BIG EZ SHOW!
First off, kudos to Old Skewl Steve Shively, who blogged about the top teams and athletes that we all bandwagon(ed) on. It's true folks... believe it or not, we all have a little bandwagon in all of us.
Now, just wanted to thank the good people down somewhere in Georgia for opening up MY NEW SPORTS BAR...
Appropriately named "The Big EZ Sports Zone." (click here for the article)
A little snippet from the article:
